Mossy Soft Shield Fern

Polystichum setiferum or Soft Shield Fern is also known as the Mossy Soft Shield Fern.
This beautiful soft low growing fern has delicate mossy fronds that are densely growing with overlapping leaves that spread outwards rather than upwards. Native to Europe this dwarf fern is most abundant in Ireland and is an excellent choice for a shady but well drained area in the garden, useful as a rockery fern. 
The Soft Shield Fern is an evergreen fern that retains good winter foliage and although hardy will benefit from some protection in harsh winter frosts.
