Syringa Vulgaris Sensation (Lilac)

Syringa Vulgaris, generally known as Common Lilac, are small, deciduous trees or shrubs originating in Eastern Europe. Grown mainly for their heavily scented flowers, Lilac Trees are beloved of wildlife and when in bloom will attract lots of butterflies and bees to the garden.

The cultivar Syringa Vulgaris Sensation produces wonderful rich purple-red flowers with a white margin giving a fantastic bi-colour effect. Highly fragrant and colourful, these lilac flowers look superb in bouquets. In fact, flowering lilacs are widely prized as cut flowers. Syringa Vulgaris Sensation flowering period is May to June. For the best flower display, promptly de-head this year’s spent flowers.

Syringas or Lilac are a very hardy and robust shrub that can also be trained easily into a small tree, eventually reaching about 3 to 4 metres in height. In terms of pruning, contrary to most deciduous plants, lilac trees are best pruned and shaped after they have finished flowering, rather than in mid-winter when dormant.

Syringas or Lilac Trees are easy to grow plants that are forgiving of drought and neglect and like a sunny spot in reasonably well draining soil.
