These Lyland Cypress hybrid conifers were developed from several conifer varieties which were brought into the UK by Plant Finders in the late 19th<\/sup>\u00a0Century.\u00a0 The Leylandii<\/strong> was developed to fulfil the need to find conifers suitable to cope with windy conditions, be fast growing (growth around 1m per annum), be salt tolerant and cope with most soil conditions. The Leyland Cypress<\/strong> has over the last decade received some bad publicity because the heights the tree can attain can cause neighbour disputes \u2013 but this only occurs where the trees are allowed to grow without being controlled,<\/strong> and then allowed to overshadow a neighbouring property, causing complete lack of light.\u00a0 Like bad dogs the fault lies with the owner.\u00a0 If trimmed regularly – just twice a year to maintain a reasonable height, then it will make an excellent neat evergreen screening hedge<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a fine example of Leylandii hedging<\/a> from Richmond in South London. It is a lovely shade of deep green in colour. It is a well-kept hedge. You can see how beautiful and lush the foliage looks, with a nice, geometric rectangular shape and good depth. At a height of approximately 8 to 9 feet, this hedge is not overly difficult to trim and maintain, requiring no more than pair of ladders and a shears. In return, this Leylandii hedge<\/a>\u00a0offers a living green wall for the privacy for the residents while its dense interior provides shelter for wildlife such as small birds.<\/p>\n

Provided you keep it in shape by trimming 2 to max 3 times a year, a Leylandii hedge<\/strong> is an ideal evergreen screen if you need a hedge fast. The important thing to remember about Leylandii hedging<\/strong> is that it must be maintained. Leylandii (Leyland Cypress or its full Latin name Cupressus Leylandii<\/a>) are very fast growing evergreen conifers. While their rapid growth means they will form a dense hedge very quickly, the corollary is that they must be kept trimmed so as not to get out of hand.<\/p>\n

Pruning your Leylandii hedge<\/strong>
\nPruning should be done about 2 to 3 times per year to the top and sides. This is best done in the growing season (generally March to August). As you can see, this hedge is due another little trim round about spring. Remember to always check for bird\u2019s nests before pruning.<\/p>\n

Growing Conditions<\/strong>
\nLeylandii trees are not overly fussy about soil type and will grow in a wide variety of soils from sand to clay and will even grow in areas where the soil is poor. They are wind and salt tolerant and will also grow well in exposed windy \/ coastal areas.<\/p>\n

Planting Leylandii Hedging<\/strong>
\nLeylandii should ideally be planted 70 cm to 1 metre apart. The closer you plant them, the more quickly they fill out to form a dense hedge.<\/p>\n
