Europeans have been clipping and shaping perennial plants into architectural or sculptural shapes for millenia – the art is known as topiary<\/a>. Topiary had a huge revival in Europe in the 16th Century when a wave of \u00a0parterres and sculptured trees appeared in the gardens of the aristocracy. This style was particularly fashionable in France and The Netherlands…think of Versailles and the grand houses of Amsterdam’s canal belt in the Golden Age.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Topiary<\/a> underwent a further development in the early part of the 20th Century when the British Arts & Crafts movement combined topiary with roses or herbaceous perennials, Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens famously practised this style of planting and one of the finest examples of this to be seen today are the gardens of Great Dixter in Sussex.<\/p>\n

It’s possible to ‘topiarise’ a wide range of plants but the most commonly used are\u00a0taxus or yew<\/a>, varieties of cupressus and laurus nobilis or bay<\/a>. Architectural shapes such as Ilex crenata globes<\/a>,\u00a0spiral trees<\/a>, pyramids and columns and sculptural topiary such as Japanese cloud trees<\/a> , cloud\u00a0pom poms<\/a>,\u00a0lollipops<\/a> and triple ball shapes<\/a> are very popular, variegated topiary\u00a0adds further interest.<\/p>\n
