Join us on our ramble through the grounds. In the 1793, the estate was leased by <strong>William Beckford<\/strong>, a famous &amp; extremely wealthy writer whom scandal forced to abandon the UK. Restoration work began promptly as did the landscaping of the amazing grounds and gardens. While in residence there, Beckford was driven to <a title=\"Garden Design Ideas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/category\/garden-inspiration-ideas\/\">create a truly romantic garden<\/a>, a living breathing 3-dimensional landscape painting. He added waterfalls, stone cromlechs and laid the foundations of today\u2019s garden structure. 15 years later, Lord Byron paid a visit and was suitably inspired to immortalise the gardens in his poem <em>Childe Harold\u2019s Pilgrimage<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2584\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2584\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/garden-ladscape-ideas.jpg\" alt=\"Chapel ruins used a landscape focal point\" width=\"600\" height=\"898\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chapel ruins used a dramatic landscape focal point by Francis Cook<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1856, new owner <strong>Sir Francis Cook<\/strong> conceived and constructed the present romantic palace &amp; gardens as a summer residence for his family. To help him, he cleverly enlisted the help of the head gardener of London\u2019s Kew Gardens. The Kew gardener planted <a title=\"Succulents\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/succulents.html\">succulents <\/a>(of which there are many), <a title=\"ornamental grasses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/grasses.html\">ornamental grasses<\/a>, <a title=\"tropical ferns\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/tree-ferns.html\">tropical ferns<\/a>, <a title=\"tree ferns\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/tree-ferns.html\">tree ferns<\/a>, conifers and innumerable <a title=\"exotic palm trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/hardy-palms.html\">exotic palm trees<\/a> as well as camellias, Arbutus (native to the area) and of course lots of <a title=\"Cork Oak Trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/cork\/cork-oak.html\">Cork Oak<\/a>.
