{"id":281,"date":"2011-06-01T08:54:14","date_gmt":"2011-06-01T08:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/?p=281"},"modified":"2019-09-22T11:18:48","modified_gmt":"2019-09-22T11:18:48","slug":"pleached-hornbeam-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/pleached-hornbeam-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Pleached Hornbeam Trees at Chelsea Flower Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Pleached Hornbeam Trees<\/strong><br \/>\nAt our visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/shows-events\/rhs-chelsea-flower-show\">RHS Chelsea Flower Show<\/a>\u00a0we were pleased to see the use of the elegant native hedging Carpinus Betulus \u2013 Hornbeam &#8211; in many Show Gardens and displays.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_287\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/large-image-extra\/hor\/236\/hornbeam.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-287\" title=\"pleached-hornbeam-trees\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/pleached-hornbeam-trees.jpg\" alt=\"Pleached Hornbeam Trees for Sale - London nursery\" width=\"600\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pleached Hornbeam Trees &#8211; Excellent Screening Trees<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Diarmiud Gavin\u2019s Chelsea Show Garden<\/strong>\u00a0(famous for the pink hanging pod) had the most beautifully shaped trees and shrubs including Hornbeams shaped as cones.\u00a0 We were also pleased that Diarmiud used a large \u00a0<a title=\"pleached photinias\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/photpl\/photinia-red-robin-pleached-tree.html\">Photinia Red Robin Tree<\/a> as a main feature for contrasting shape and colour.\u00a0 (Photinia are often avoided by garden designers as being too commonly used but they make an excellent ornamental shrub, hedge or tree, they look good at any time of the year and can be grown by anyone in any position).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_285\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/photpl\/photinia-red-robin-pleached-tree.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-285\" class=\"size-full wp-image-285\" title=\"pleached-trees\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/pleached-trees.jpg\" alt=\"Pleached Tree Specialist Nursery - Paramount Plants\" width=\"600\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pleached Trees | Hornbeam Frame | Pleached Hornbeam | Pleached Photinia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Hornbeam As <a title=\"hedging plants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/hedging.html\">Hedging<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nHornbeam makes a wonderful contemporary green backdrop to other smaller trees and shrubs. \u00a0Native to Britain, and similar to green Beech, the <a title=\"Pleached hornbeam for hedging\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/large-image-extra\/hor\/235\/hornbeam.html\">Hornbeam<\/a> can be used for hedging but are most often trained onto tall frames, and used as a contemporary hedge or screen above the fence line. Hornbeam are also grown on frames bushy from the ground upwards to create a simple, green living panel against a fence or wall.\u00a0 These frames can also be used as a stand-alone panel to create a backdrop to a special garden ornament, urn or sculpture (as can be seen in the photo below of Paul Vanstone\u2019s stunning sculptures at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 with our <a title=\"Hornbeam Frames at Chelsea Flower Show 2011\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/large-image-extra\/hor\/235\/hornbeam.html\">Hornbeam Frames<\/a> behind).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_284\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/hor\/hornbeam.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-284\" class=\"size-full wp-image-284\" title=\"paul-vanstone-sculptures\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/paul-vanstone-sculptures.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Vanstone Sculptures at Chelsea Flower Show 2011\" width=\"600\" height=\"494\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Vanstone Sculptures &#8211; Hornbeam border at Chelsea Flower Show 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hornbeam are deciduous but the leaves will keep their form over the harshest winter months, even though their foliage turns copper\/brown from November to February. \u00a0 The leaves are dark\/mid-green and they have dense bushy foliage in the Summer months (March to November). \u00a0 Slow\/medium growth rate <a title=\"Hornbeam Pleached Trees for Sale\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/large-image-extra\/hor\/235\/hornbeam.html\">Hornbeam <\/a>cope well with windy positions and can be grown in heavy clay soils.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planting Pleached Trees<\/strong><br \/>\nRemember when planting Pleached trees make sure that adequate staking or framework is factored in and also recommended that each frame is tied together to maintain a good line and one that is not likely to move in winter storms. Stakes can normally be removed in around 3-5 years.
