\nIt is no secret that we’re lovers of Oriental garden design at Paramount Plants<\/a>. Earlier this year, we discovered\u00a0a most surprising find, just one hour north of Lisbon at Quinta Dos Loridos, you will find the Buddha Eden Garden. A<\/em>n ambitious Oriental Peace Garden which is in fact the largest oriental garden in Europe.
\nWe were intrigued to find out more… conceived and created in 2001, by the wealthy art patron Jos\u00e9 Berardo, the garden occupies over 35 hectares and welcomes everyone in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, embracing a multi faith philosophy, to promote peace and understanding. Central to its success as a garden, is not surprisingly the planting itself, yes the statuary is impressive but it is the nature and planting\u00a0that steals the show…<\/p>\n

Taking centre stage,\u00a0is an enormous\u00a0reclining Buddha carved from marble and reached via a marble staircase, surrounded by lush planting, including a huge\u00a0array of palm trees<\/a>, forests of bamboo<\/a> and Portuguese cork oaks<\/a>, citrus groves and ancient olive trees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As you wander through these carefully designed gardens among the cork oaks and olive groves, you will encounter\u00a0marble\u00a0statuary\u00a0representing\u00a0Hindu deities, Buddhas and Jain gods and goddesses. A startling discovery are the\u00a0seven hundred, hand painted\u00a0Chinese terracotta warriors\u00a0standing guard along the top ridge within a huge grove of Quercus Suber, Cork Oaks
\n<\/a><\/strong>and surrounded by beds containing thousands of Blue Agapanthus<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Clusters\u00a0of ancient olive trees, which\u00a0have been\u00a0bonsai’d, are clipped and shaped with table top flatness to fully\u00a0display their gnarled trunks and sculptural shape.<\/p>\n

We subsequently saw these exact, same style Olive trees pop up\u00a0in the Royal Bank of Canada silver gilt winner at the Chelsea Flower Show 2015.\u00a0 It’s heartening to know that despite a garden with this design\u00a0being created in Portugal, it’s quite possible to grow almost all of these trees or something very<\/strong><\/em> similar in the UK climate.
