Right now, in the very earliest days of Autumn – with still the chance\u00a0of late<\/em> summer days, is the absolute best time to plant\u00a0Magnolia. The ground is still warm and receptive and there will be plenty of weeks for the tree or shrub to settle before the really cold weather starts. Planting Magnolias <\/a>in Autumn requires a bit of forward\u00a0thinking, essentially, you’re planning six months ahead and one simply has to remember those magical Spring days when after a long, cold, wet winter the Magnolias appeared and they were magnificent!
\nMagnolias are simply one of the most beautiful flowering trees and their clouds of white or pale pink blossom are a joyful reminder that finally, warmer days are ahead.

Choosing A Magnolia<\/strong><\/em>
\nChoosing the right tree for your space is one of the most important choices\u00a0that we here at Paramount can help you with, our expert team is on-hand to give you sound advice on the right Magnolia for your garden – soil type, aspect and size at maturity are all important considerations – but with the\u00a0large\u00a0range of varieties available – there will be the right Magnolia for you and we can help you select it.<\/p>\n

Preparing your Magnolia for planting.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>
\nMagnolia’s do not like to be moved often and it’s generally accepted that the larger (more mature) specimens are best at getting established initially when planted, so our advice is to invest in the most mature specimen you can afford. \u00a0Choosing a site<\/em> – Magnolias are hardy and they will withstand a frost but they do prefer a sunny site and this will encourage more blooms each season, unless you’re growing any of the Magnolia Stellata varieties, which are naturally found growing in woodland and so will happily grow and flower in partial shade.
\nGood soil preparation is essential<\/em>, Magnolias need moisture for healthy growth of those large leaves and for flower production and this should be throughout the season, before you plant make sure you add plenty of good quality mulch (don’t use peat or mushroom compost, these are far too drying) into the hole before inserting your tree. A good mulch should be applied around the base of the tree every year in early Spring, and make sure your tree has plenty of water throughout its first growing season. The soil doesn’t have to be acid – a neutral pH or slightly acidic is fine, the main thing to watch out for, is not to let your tree dry out. Before you plant<\/em> – soak the tree in a bucket of water for a couple of hours, make a hole at least twice the size of the rootball, fill the hole with water and let it drain away, then add a good amount of moist mulch in the bottom of the hole. Then plant your tree with plenty of mulch as a back fill and ‘heel’ in the tree to remove any pockets of air. Water the tree again.<\/p>\n
