Winter flowering Camellia Sasanqua<\/strong> is perhaps less well known than its spring flowering relative Camellia Japonica<\/a>. Nevertheless, Camellia Sasanquas, such as the lovely Camellia Sasanqua Cleopatra White<\/a> are a garden treasure, bringing uplifting colour and fragrance to the garden from autumn right through to early spring \u2013 exactly when it\u2019s most needed.\u00a0 Sasanquas have been cultivated in their native Japan since the 1300\u2019s!<\/p>\n

Graceful and airy winter flowering Camellias are slow growing, usually reaching a maximum height in the UK of circa 4 metres. Although smaller than Camellia Japonica flowers, Camellia Sasanqua flowers tend to be abundant and are known for their fragrance. Evergreen Sasanquas have beautiful dark green foliage and a more spreading growth than the dense-growing better known camellia varieties. Camellia Sasanquas lend themselves to light trimming, best done in mid-summer. Ideal as stand-alone ornamental shrubs, you could also consider Camellia Sasanqua if you are looking for an unusual winter flowering evergreen hedge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although Autumn’s changing leaves do provide a beautiful backdrop in the autumnal garden, \u00a0a few ‘star’ shrubs<\/a> carefully positioned can really steal the show.\u00a0 Some of the most stunning blooms in Autumn are the winter flowering camellias<\/a> – beautiful delicate pinks and purples will really lift a shady corner. Camellias are evergreen<\/a> with gorgeous glossy leaves and showy blooms. They prefer shelter with light shade and will thrive best in an ‘acid’ aka ericaceous soil, mulched with plenty of leaf mould. If you don’t have an acid soil in your garden, don’t despair these beauties will grow well in containers filled with ericaceous soil.

\nA good tip<\/strong> is to use rain water for watering these shrubs, especially if you live in a ‘hard’ water area.<\/p>\n
