Wordsworth loved nature and was a talented landscape designer too.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7354\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7354\" class=\"wp-image-7354 size-fusion-600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/wordsworths-couch-and-library-600x376.jpg\" alt=\"William Wordsworth's drawing room at Rydal Mount in the Lake District, Cumbria\" width=\"600\" height=\"376\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Library and drawing room at Wordsworth&#8217;s house, Cumbria<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Wordsworth\u2019s Poetry Was Inspired By The Natural World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth\u2019s poetry demonstrates his love of the natural world and his view that nature has a beneficial effect on the human mind.<\/p>\n<p>He believed that our intellectual and spiritual development was directly linked to the amount of time we spend in the great outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>His poem &#8216;<em>London, 1802<\/em>&#8216; and &#8216;<em>The World Is Too Much With Us<\/em>&#8216; shows he thought that we become selfish and immoral without a relationship with nature. He believed that living in cramped, urban environments led to evil, whereas country-folk who lived close to the land retained their pureness of spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Today Wordsworth\u2019s views on human interaction with the environment are described as pioneering, and modern medical studies concur with his point of view &#8211; that we are healthier and happier immersed in nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coleorton Hall Landscape Design<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth\u2019s love of landscape design found an outlet when he created a winter garden for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksandgardens.org\/places\/coleorton-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coleorton Hall<\/a> in Leicester after becoming friends with Lord Beaumont who had offered Wordsworth Hall Farm when his family outgrew <a href=\"https:\/\/wordsworth.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dove Cottage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth was asked to create a winter garden at Coleorton and he designed extensive plans from disguising old mine workings with strategically planted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/trees.html\">trees<\/a>, right down to small details such as a hidden grotto with shellwork.<\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth\u2019s reputation as a talented landscape designer grew from his work at Coleorton Hall and can be enjoyed today at his final home &#8211; Rydal Mount.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7359\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7359\" class=\"wp-image-7359 size-fusion-600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/wordsworths-summer-house-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"The Summer House in Wordsworth\u2019s Garden at Rydal Mount. \" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Summer House in Wordsworth\u2019s Garden at Rydal Mount, where he worked on his most famous poem.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wordsworth\u2019s Garden &#8211; Rydal Mount<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After living at Hall Farm Wordsworth spent the latter part of his life from 1813 to 1850 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rydalmount.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rydal Mount<\/a> near Ambleside in the Lake District where he created beautiful gardens alongside his wife Mary and his sister Dorothy.<\/p>\n<p>The landscaped gardens are still very close to the original layout and they give an insight into the variety of landscapes that Wordsworth enjoyed spending his time in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7358\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7358\" class=\"wp-image-7358 size-fusion-600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/rydal-mount-house-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"William Wordsworth's House &amp; Gardens at Rydal Mount in Cumbria. \" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the garden of William Wordsworth&#8217;s House at Rydal Mount.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rydal Mount gardens include separate areas that all harmoniously sit in five acres.<\/p>\n<p>These include distinctive woodlands, water features with rock pools, a fellside terraced garden, an ancient mound, and high points that overlook glorious Rydal Water and Windermere.<\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth\u2019s mix of wild nature and formal gardens is stimulating but ultimately relaxing and the gardens provide a peaceful escape from the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>Regular visitors to Rydal Mount were the poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats who frequently came to stay in Wordsworth\u2019s tranquil surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount for 37 years and wrote the final edits to &#8216;<em>I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud&#8217;<\/em> in the terraced summerhouse that overlooks Rydal Water.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7356\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7356\" class=\"wp-image-7356 size-fusion-600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/view-rydal-water-prog-600x627.jpg\" alt=\"View of Rydal water from Wordsworth Gardens in the Lake District\" width=\"600\" height=\"627\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of Rydal Water from Wordsworth&#8217;s Garden<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Dora\u2019s Daffodil Field<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1826 Wordsworth bought the nearby Rash Field which is situated next to the churchyard of\u00a0St Mary\u2019s Church and very close\u00a0to Rydal Mount.<\/p>\n<p>Wordsworth planned to build a house there when his landlady Lady Anne le Flemming had threatened to withdraw his tenancy. Wordsworth\u2019s planned house would have blocked the view of Rydal Water and Windermere from Rydal Mount thus reducing its value.<\/p>\n<p>Plans were drawn up, but Lady Flemming withdrew her threat of eviction and when Wordsworth\u2019s daughter Dora died of tuberculosis in 1847 Wordsworth planted the \u00a0Rash Field with daffodils in her memory.<\/p>\n<p>Dora\u2019s daffodils are small, delicate plants rather than the bold and friendly \u2018<em>host of golden daffodils<\/em>\u2019 in his most famous poem, and the field was renamed \u2018Dora\u2019s Field\u2019.
