The massive light-blocking, grass-killing tree is no longer needed to produce a tasty crop of fruits. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best fruit trees for small gardens are often referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/fruit-trees.html\">patio fruit trees<\/a> and come trained as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/mddy\/malus-domestica-discovery.html\">half standard apples<\/a> or pears, cordons, container trees and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/pdo\/prunus-domestica-opal.html\">self-pollinating fruit trees<\/a>. Half standards are shorter than full standard trees and generally only need an annual prune. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A traditional, lollipop-shaped standard or half standard tree at the back of a sunny border can produce plenty of fruit. Try this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/mdse\/malus-domestica-starks-earliest.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early fruiting apple tree (Starks Earliest)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already trained in a lovely half-standard shape. Stark&#8217;s Earliest is moderately self-fertile but will produce a more bountiful crop with an early-blooming pollinating partner. For those of us with smaller gardens, a pair of Stark&#8217;s Earliest half-standards in a sunny spot should do the trick. You can also grow these half standards in containers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For a self-fertilising Full Standard Fruit tree, you could try\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/mdqc\/malus-domestica-queen-cox.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 metre tall Queen Cox apple.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Again, prune once per year to maintain the full-standard shape. Other examples of Standard Fruit Trees include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/map\/morus-alba-pendula.html\">Morus Alba Pendula or Weeping White Mulberry<\/a> which produces edible fruits. If its an evergreen option you are after, the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slow-growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/arun\/arbutus-unedo.html\">Arbutus or Strawberry Tree<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that fruits in autumn and is a very pretty small tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cordons \u2013 Fans and Espaliers<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re pushed for space height-wise then the best options are cordoned fruit trees. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cordons are trees that have been pruned and trained on a single main stem with fruiting side branches. They produce lots of fruit when trained along a sunny wall as the heat encourages fruiting and ripens fruit in our unpredictable climate.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also set up a trellis that partitions your garden \u2013 so long as it\u2019s a flat, vertical surface a cordoned fruit tree will climb it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most popular shapes are espaliers and fan-trained and there are one-tier step-overs too. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Espaliers are a single vertical stem with right-angled horizontal side branches that bear fruit whereas a fan-trained fruit tree takes the form of an attractive spreading fan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great fruits for an <strong>espalier or fan shape<\/strong> include the ever-popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/mdrg\/malus-domestica-royal-gala.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Gala apple tree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Award_of_Garden_Merit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RHS Award<\/a> Of Garden Merit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/mder\/malus-domestica-egremont-russet.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egremont Russell.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Pears make great fan-trained specimens too and you can\u2019t beat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/pddc\/pyrus-doyenne-du-comice.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doyenne du Comice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/pcc\/pyrus-communis-conference.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conference Pear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Espaliers and fan-trained fruit trees sit tight to the wall and take up so little lateral room, you can create an orchard of different fruits in the smallest garden so long as you give them a sunny spot.\u00a0 You could even train one over an arch or pergola. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you like the idea of arches and pergolas covered in fruit there\u2019s always the option of a vine fruit. These can be grown in sunny spots of all heights. Try this hardy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/adjb\/actinidia-deliciosa-jenny-boskoop.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kiwi fruit<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/vvb\/vitis-vinifera-blanc.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grape Vine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Container Grown Fruit Trees<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, the best way to grow fruit in a small garden without a lawn or border is to use container grown fruit trees. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a tree is grown in a pot the root system is restricted so it stays smaller. They do need a lot of water and food though so it is a commitment.
