The rest of us know it as Crape Myrtle \u2013 or sometimes Crepe Myrtle.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not hard to figure out why this common name has stuck. It\u2019s because the petals are crinkled and have frilly edges that resemble crepe paper. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lagerstroemia isn\u2019t used a great deal in UK gardens, but we want to change that because it\u2019s a cheerful, bright shrub or tree with masses of long flowering blooms that look stunning. So here&#8217;s why everyone should grow Lagerstroemia&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7676\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7676\" class=\"wp-image-7676 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/lagerstroemia-indica-nivea-white-flowering.jpg\" alt=\"Why Everyone Should Grow Lagerstroemia\" width=\"600\" height=\"443\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gorgeous white flowering Lagerstroemia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>A Little Bit Of History<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crape Myrtles are native to the Indian subcontinent, south east Asia, and northern Australia but they\u2019ve been grown in Europe for centuries.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The genus was named after Swedish merchant <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailygardener.org\/ota20200705\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magnus von Lagerstrom<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who supplied botanist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Linnaeus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carl Linnaeus<\/a> with new and exotic plants in the 1700s. Linnaeus formalised the modern system of naming organisms and is known as the father of modern taxonomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where Have I Seen It Before?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably seen Crape Myrtle on holiday.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever walked from a resort to the local restaurants in France, Spain, Sardinia or Italy you\u2019ll have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/lir\/lagerstroemia-indica-rhapsody-in-pink.html\">pink<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/livi\/lagerstroemia-indica-nivea.html\">white<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/laiv\/lagerstroemia-indica-violacea.html\">purple crape myrtles<\/a> lining the walkways and gardens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s up there with bougainvillaea on the wow scale with bright intense colours like our reliable friends the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/rhodovan\/rhododendron-van.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhododendrons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/cjlc\/camellia-japonica-lady-campbell.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">camellias.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Aren\u2019t Crape Myrtle\u2019s Hard To Grow?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a misconception that crape myrtle is hard to grow and that\u2019s because it needs lots of sun to flower. It\u2019s actually hardy down to sub-zero temperatures and generally pest resistant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effort you\u2019ll put into crape myrtle is choosing the sunniest spot available. Popping it in a south or west-facing border against a sheltered sunny wall or fence is ideal. After that, water until it&#8217;s established and cover young plants with fleece if a harsh frost is predicted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your back garden is shady what about the front garden? You can grow crape myrtle in a large well-watered pot as a shrub on your doorstep for maximum impact colour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re further north or the garden is exposed there\u2019s a new series of crape myrtles just out. It\u2019s called \u2018Indiya Charms\u2019 and they\u2019ve been bred to cope better with a northern European climate. The series comes in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/licn\/lagerstroemia-indiya-charms-neige-d-ete.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/licv\/lagerstroemia-indiya-charms-violet-d-ete.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/lic\/lagerstroemia-indiya-charms-fuchsia-d-ete.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pale pink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/lsi\/lagerstroemia-indiya-charms-braise-d-ete.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intense pink.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of 20-50 years a crape myrtle can reach eight metres tall, but they generally grow a bit shorter in the UK because it&#8217;s cooler here.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7679\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7679\" class=\"wp-image-7679 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/lagerstroemia-indica-pink-flowering.jpg\" alt=\"Why Everyone Should Grow Lagerstroemia\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Why Everyone Should Grow Lagerstroemia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Crape Murder!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to prune a crape myrtle unless you want to keep the size down.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old advice told us to cut down all the branches of a crape myrtle because flowering occurred on new growth, but this isn\u2019t strictly true.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst you do get more flowers on new growth, the heaviness of huge conical panicles on insubstantial whippy branches means the plant flops. You\u2019ll get plenty of flowers on the old wood so go steady with the secateurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting it down each year also makes the plant less cold hardy and destroys the attractive peeling bark of an older trunk.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This harsh pruning is called Crape Murder and it\u2019s added to the difficulty of growing them here.\u00a0 Judicious pruning where necessary is better \u2013 just let your crape myrtle do its own thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7680\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7680\" class=\"wp-image-7680 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/lagerstroemia-indica-violacea.jpg\" alt=\"Why Everyone Should Grow Lagerstroemia\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crepe Myrtle Violacea<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Why Should I Buy One?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every garden needs a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/liv\/lagerstroemia-indica-varieties.html\">Lagerstroemia<\/a>. If you haven\u2019t committed crape murder Lagerstroemia develops beautiful peeling bark. It\u2019s a grey-orange shade and flakes away to reveal a smoother underside.
