If you\u2019re looking to plant up or improve a west-facing border then you\u2019ve struck gold.\u00a0 <\/span>A sun-soaked west-facing wall is one of the best places to grow many colourful plants but it\u2019s not without a few challenges. <\/span>The main issue you\u2019ll have is the temperature level.\u00a0 West-facing walls receive the afternoon sun and evening heat which can be ferocious in the height of summer.\u00a0 <\/span>Not only that, but the brickwork will soak up the day\u2019s heat, releasing it throughout the evening and night like a hot water bottle. <\/span>Not all plants can cope with this. Photinia can grow large so this one will need a yearly prune to keep its size down.\u00a0<\/span>The lavender-scented <\/span>Caryopteris Heavenly Blue<\/span><\/a> is a magnet for bees and the continental favourite Lagerstroemia, otherwise known as crepe myrtle, will flourish in a west-facing hot spot. This <\/span>violet version<\/span><\/a> is a stand-out choice and we have many others including pink and white specimens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Front of the Border
\n<\/b>The front of a border needs low-growing ground-cover plants. Luckily, there are plenty of heat-seekers to choose from. <\/span>All types of <\/span>cistus<\/span><\/a> \u2013 the pretty rock rose – love a west-facing wall as do hardy geraniums. You can\u2019t beat \u2018plant of the centenary\u2019 geranium Rozanne in a hot spot. Dead-head rock rose and geraniums so they flower all summer.\u00a0<\/span>For a pop of colour add <\/span>lavender,<\/span><\/a> flowering rosemary, thyme, daffodils, tulips, and <\/span>creeping phlox<\/span><\/a>.
