Plants are supposed to grow in the ground, it&#8217;s where water and nutrients they need to grow are easily accessed and pots just can\u2019t provide this environment. We recommend at least doubling the size of the pot your plant arrives in, especially if you want to grow a containerised tree or another plant with a big root system. Smaller plants are more successfully grown in containers, but make sure you know how big the plant will eventually get. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/vcgt\/vaccinium-corymbosum-goldtraube-71.html\">blueberries<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/cjlc\/camellia-japonica-lady-campbell.html\">camellias<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/azaste\/azalea-stewartstonian.html\">azaleas<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/rhodosurrheath\/rhododendron-surrey-heath.html\">rhododendrons<\/a> like acidic soil so use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/w\/westland-ericaceous-planting-and-potting-mix.html\">ericaceous compost<\/a> for them. Most other mature plants benefit from John Innes no. 3. Refresh the pot\u2019s soil every two to three years by removing a third of the depth and replace it with fresh soil. You can use organic matter or dry mulches such as gravel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All Important Drainage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All containers need good drainage so there should be holes in the base of any container you choose.<br \/>\nIt helps to pop a few broken terracotta pieces or polystyrene peanuts in the base to cover larger holes and prevent the precious soil from washing out when you water. Elevating the container with small feet, will help drain out any excess water.<br \/>\nEnsuring good drainage is an important step because when water builds up in a container it rots the root system and eventually may kill the plant.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7737\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7737\" class=\"wp-image-7737 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrangea-little-lime.jpg\" alt=\"Hydrangea Little Lime Shrub growing in a terracotta pot\" width=\"600\" height=\"610\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hydrangea Little Lime grows well in a container but needs plenty of water especially in summer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Stabilising Tall Plants <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/low-growing.html\">Low growing plants<\/a> are generally safe in a container but taller plants will need stabilising. Trees and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/phyllaureo\/phyllostachys-aureosulcata.html\">bamboos<\/a> for example catch in the wind and topple over, especially if they\u2019ve dried out. This can damage your plant and smash the container too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pruning \u2013 Size Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No matter how big your container is at some point the plant will outgrow it and that\u2019s why pruning is so important. Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant-health.html\">appropriate slow-release food<\/a> according to the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions.<br \/>\nLarge pot plants need feeding once a month during the growing season compared to border grown plants that need feeding just once or twice a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Often Should I Water My Pot Plants?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pot grown plants need lots of water \u2013 even if it\u2019s been raining! People tend to underestimate the amount of water a pot plant needs.<br \/>\nSunshine and heat dry out containers, but less obvious is that wind does too. The combination of heat and wind dries containers out from every angle<strong>, <\/strong>so in the summer months pot plants will often need water every single day.<br \/>\nIf you don\u2019t like watering or just don&#8217;t have the time,\u00a0 there are plenty of easy to use irrigation systems to help you out, these can be set up to deliver just the right amount of water to each container right throughout the year. Tender tropicals such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplants.co.uk\/plant\/dickant\/dicksonia-antarctica.html\">tree ferns<\/a> need insulation in the cold months. Straw carefully placed into the crown works well at protecting next years delicate frond buds from the frost and you should insulate the container to protect the roots.<br \/>\nWrap plenty of fleece or bubble wrap around the pot to keep roots safe from frosts and icy winds.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have our guide to growing plants in a container.
