\nIf you have a balcony or a patio you can create a relaxing, cheerful, and health-giving space. It\u2019s just a case of choosing the right plants – and we can help you there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Take A Seat<\/b><\/p>\n

Before choosing any plants pick out comfortable and practical seating.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThere\u2019s nothing better than relaxing in a balcony garden and the best way to enjoy it is immersing yourself right in the thick of it with a drink and a comfy seat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do You Have Wind Troubles?<\/b><\/p>\n

Balconies are often high and dry spaces. If yours feels like a tornado corridor, consider installing trellis or screening to create a windbreak. <\/span>Trellis<\/span><\/a> and screens are available in many materials and colours, just be sure to secure whatever you choose with cable ties or a good <\/span>quality screening kit <\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIf screens and trellis are not your thing then choose tough windproof plants like Pinus. AGM winning Pinus <\/span>Mugo Mops<\/span><\/a> is extra tough as is bluey-green <\/span>Juniper Moonglow<\/span><\/a>. They look great as standalone specimens and they\u2019ll help protect other large foliaged or flowering plants \u2013 plus they\u2019re evergreen which means year-round colour.<\/span><\/p>\n

What About Soil?<\/b><\/p>\n

Rather obviously, balconies don\u2019t have any soil so you need to provide it using containers, window boxes, grow bags, and hanging baskets.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe bigger the pot the better in a balcony garden as it cuts down watering. Mulching container tops will seal in moisture and <\/span>wood<\/span><\/a>, plastic, fibreglass or metal containers are better than terracotta as terracotta gets drier than the Sahara in windy conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nFeed all your containers well because nutrients won\u2019t be replenished by Mother Nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is It Sunny or Shady?<\/b><\/p>\n

The next step is to figure out how much sun your balcony receives as this will indicate which plants are suitable. South and west-facing balconies get more sun than north-facing balconies for example.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also Perfect on Roast Potatoes <\/span>rosemary<\/span><\/a>, succulents such as <\/span>Aloe Vera<\/span><\/a>, the hardy seaside daisy Erigeron, most roses, berberis \u2013 we recommend <\/span>Rose Glow<\/span><\/a>, buddleias, and sun-loving Chaenomeles like this red AGM winning <\/span>Superba<\/span><\/a>. These plants will all tolerate hot sun so long as they are watered well.\u00a0<\/span>
\nGreat choices for a sunny balcony garden that also receives shade are a scented\u00a0 daphne, AGM winning <\/span>Pieris Forest Flame<\/span><\/a>, potentilla, and weigela. You can grow tomatoes, peppers, chilies, basil, and coriander there too. Phew!<\/span><\/p>\n

Shady Balconies \u2013 Think Woodlands\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Plants that grow in woodland have large leaves because they live beneath the tree canopy and need to catch as much light and water as possible.<\/span>
\nThis type of plant doesn\u2019t like the direct sun because it scorches foliage \u2013 which means they\u2019re perfect for a shady, wind-protected balcony.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThere\u2019s lots of choice! Fatsia Japonica is lovely with its huge architectural leaves. This <\/span>variegated cultivar<\/span><\/a> is extra special. An acer like <\/span>Sode Nishiki<\/span><\/a> is another good pick, and hydrangeas<\/a> will enjoy the shadier aspect \u2013 and because your hydrangea will be in a pot you can manage an acid-loving <\/span>blue variety<\/span><\/a> with ericaceous compost<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen it comes to filling the ground level space choose begonias, any woodland bulbs like bluebells, ferns, and <\/span>hostas<\/span><\/a> that will all enjoy the coolness so long as the wind levels aren\u2019t too extreme.<\/span>
\nIf it\u2019s still breezy in your shady balcony garden choose tougher plants with small leaves like alpines, topiary ilex <\/span>like these lollipops<\/span><\/a>, box, yew, festuca glauca, euonymus <\/span>\u2013 we stock a lot<\/span><\/a> of pretty evergreen euonymus. Dwarf conifers<\/a> are a great choice too as they bring lots of interesting textures and shapes.<\/span><\/p>\n
