Take A Seat<\/b><\/p>\n

Seating is always first on our garden essentials list when preparing the garden for entertaining. Taking a pew in your garden is one of life\u2019s pleasures whether you\u2019re enjoying a quiet early morning cup of coffee or entertaining a crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Arbours<\/span><\/a> are always popular because they\u2019re attractive structures especially if you wrap solar lights around the slats for soft dusk lighting. Benches are a good addition too and you can\u2019t go wrong with a traditional style. <\/span>This particular bench<\/span><\/a> has integral planters for extra growing space. Choose bright, scented flowers<\/a> and no-one can resist a cheeky 5-minute break there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside your \u2018proper\u2019 outdoor seating dust down the emergency chairs and oil creaky folding seat hinges for those guests that always turn up unannounced. We\u2019re looking at you Uncle Chris!<\/span><\/p>\n

Kids are usually happy with a large blanket on the ground \u2013 throw down some cushions, colouring books, and they\u2019re happy<\/span>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Pop Up tents are a perfect hang-out space for kids in the garden.<\/p><\/div>\n

Scent\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Lots of our large plants are<\/span> sweet-smelling such as<\/span> daphne<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>lavender<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Fragrant star jasmine<\/span><\/a> is always popular and more unusual is <\/span>camphor laurel<\/span><\/a> that gives off a cinnamon spicy scent. It\u2019s usually used as hedging<\/a>, but it\u2019ll suit a specimen container too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Screens<\/b><\/p>\n

If you have a fence or trellis<\/a> nearby a climber<\/a> like star jasmine, a <\/span>passionflowe<\/span><\/a>r, or a climbing rose<\/a> will block out your nosy neighbours and provide shade or wind shelter for your guests. <\/span>We recommend <\/span>Rosa Barock<\/span><\/a> \u2013 this beautiful yellowy-pink climbing rose is a real stunner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Planting that doubles as food<\/b><\/p>\n

Admire your plants and eat them too! <\/span><\/p>\n

Bay<\/span><\/a> goes well on grilled meats and mint not only improves water it keeps flies away if you squeeze a few leaves throughout the day. Keep mint in a container though because it spreads like wildfire. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rosemary<\/span><\/a> is another fragrant plant that doubles as food. It enhances red meat like lamb and its evergreen so you can pick it throughout the winter months. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dessert time? The best bit! What about a currant bush? <\/span>Currants<\/span><\/a> can be picked straight off the plant and dropped onto ice cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Play With Colours<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A theme of one or maybe two colours is a popular way of sprucing up an entertaining space. White is always a popular choice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Good white plants include <\/span>agapanthus<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>white lilacs<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> RHS<\/a> winner <\/span>white hydrangea<\/span><\/a>, and RHS winning <\/span>rock rose<\/span><\/a>s<\/span>. Texture<\/b> and Structure<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Colour isn\u2019t everything. In shadier areas, large lush leaves create a tropical feel. Why not go all out with a massive <\/span>gunnera<\/span><\/a> for the best photo opportunities?<\/span><\/p>\n

In hotter areas standard lollipop <\/span>bay<\/span><\/a> trees, holly, yew, and conifers create structure. Take a look at our\u00a0 blog on using dwarf conifers<\/a><\/span>\u00a0if you need some ideas. Conifers are hardwearing in high traffic areas and we love them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We couldn\u2019t mention structure without suggesting box. These <\/span>box cubes<\/span><\/a> are excellent, but if you\u2019re in a box blight area try the Betterbuxus blight-resistant varieties such as <\/span>Renaissance<\/span><\/a>. They grow fast so you can shape them as you please.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Combining texture, structure, and colour is a UK favourite \u2013 Buddleia<\/a>. Buddleia has bright structural flowers plus it’s tough and you can cut it down to the ground each spring. RHS AGM winner <\/span>Miss Ruby<\/span><\/a> is a compact pink one that\u2019ll sit happily in a container, there are also white and purple\/blue varieties. The butterflies will thank you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cooking Up Your Food\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

With your plants looking fine, you can concentrate on the chef. <\/span><\/p>\n

Cooking outside is a pleasure with the right equipment. Is it time to upgrade the BBQ? We have <\/span>gas-powered<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>charcoal<\/span><\/a> BBQs but becoming more popular are fire pits. Fire pits<\/a> create heat and light as the day wears on and some <\/span>firepits double as a BBQ<\/span><\/a>. Great space savers! <\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not keen on BBQ food then a <\/span>pizza oven<\/span><\/a> is the way forward. They are pricey but good investments. If you clean them and cover them up in winter they\u2019ll last a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n

An overlooked aspect of an entertaining space is the ground. Damp grass, mud, and uneven soil aren\u2019t nice to stand on so spruce them up with bark chippings, gravel, paving, turf or artificial grass. It makes a big difference.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIf your entertaining space is the<\/span> patio or decking this top-notch <\/span>scrubbing brush<\/span><\/a> will help remove winter stains – and finally why not <\/span>improve the lawn<\/span><\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rake out moss and thatch then reseed any bare patches. Grass seed grows quickly if you keep it watered and protect it with fleece against those inevitable hungry pigeons and cats looking for a toilet. <\/span><\/p>\n
