Orchards are really beautiful places, but not many of us have a field-sized back garden to plant the orchard that dreams are made of<\/a>! <\/span>But wait, the good news is you don\u2019t need a field – because the number of trees officially required to make an orchard is just five. And with the increasing popularity of Patio Fruit Trees<\/a>, it gets even easier!<\/span><\/p>\n

Five trees are a number we can work with no matter how large or, more to the point, how small our space is, because fruit trees<\/a> grow in plenty of innovative ways. Take stepovers, fan-trained fruit trees<\/a>, or half standards<\/a> for example – there are lots of options and these<\/span> smaller-sized fruit trees<\/a> are easy to manage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

So fancy growing some tasty fruit?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at how to create a garden orchard and claim the orchard title for your very own, even if your space is limited.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How To Create A Garden Orchard: one space saving option is espaliered fruit trees<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>What Types of Fruit Can I Grow In My Garden?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Lots! <\/span>There are apples<\/a>, pears<\/a>, plums<\/a>, and cherries<\/a> plus greengages<\/a>, mulberries<\/a>, quinces<\/a>, crab apples<\/a>, peaches, citrus fruits, and figs<\/a>. And not forgetting exotics such as pommegranite trees<\/a> which will grow in sheltered parts of the UK (e.g. Chelsea Physic Garden<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Orchards are traditionally fruit-based, but why stop there? We think anything you can eat is worth growing so let\u2019s include <\/span>nuts<\/span><\/a>, berries, and currants<\/a> too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a list<\/span><\/a> of all the fruit trees<\/a> we sell. They\u2019re an established size and ready to take on your garden in a variety of growing styles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How To Turn Your Garden Into An Orchard<\/b><\/h3>\n

Forget the traditional straight lines of large fruiting trees. There are lots of ways to grow fruit so it can be incorporated into your existing garden.<\/span><\/p>\n

Space in the Border\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

Could you fit a few half standard fruiting trees in there amongst the shrubs<\/a>? <\/span>Standard Pear Williams Bon Chretien<\/span><\/a> and a <\/span>full standard quince<\/span><\/a> would happily grow in a sunny to partially sunny border.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you fancy something a bit different in the border, how about a<\/span> Weeping White Mulberry<\/span><\/a> which produces edible fruit? Plant bulbs and shade hardy perennials<\/a> beneath it.<\/span><\/p>\n

If so, choose some cordon fruit trees to grow on a wire partition<\/span><\/p>\n

Cordons are very popular because they maximize fruiting and take up little space. They\u2019re trees trained on a single stem with fruiting side branches. We like <\/span>Cox\u2019s Orange Pippin<\/span><\/a> which does very well as a cordon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wander Up the Garden Path<\/b><\/h4>\n

You could define a garden path with a row of knee-high stepovers<\/a>. Stepovers are low-growing fruit trees that are trained to grow horizontally close to the ground. Apples grow particularly well as a 50 cm high stepover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or how about two matching containers with your fruit of choice marking the start of the path? Half standard cooking apple <\/span>Manks Codlin\u00a0<\/span><\/a>could look good there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Against A Wall<\/b><\/h4>\n

Walls and fence lines are great for espaliered and fan-trained fruit trees because they take up little room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Espaliers have single vertical stems with right-angled fruiting branches, whereas fan-trained specimens are well – fans! Queen Cox is a splendid <\/span>Espaliered Apple<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fan trained apple Discovery<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>fan trained Conference Pear<\/span><\/a> soak up a wall\u2019s warmth and provide lots of fruit. Try planting one against your sunny shed or outbuilding.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s space you probably hadn\u2019t thought of using!<\/span><\/p>\n

Block out nosy neighbours or traffic noise with a fruiting pleached tree<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We specialise in above fence line <\/span>pleached<\/span> trees \u2013 that\u2019s the chic looking tree-on-stilts<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why not try <\/span>Victoria Plum<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Pleached Pear Tree Doyenne du Comice<\/span><\/a>?<\/span> They produce lots of tasty fruit, create privacy, and cooling shade in one hit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Improve a Patio, Deck or Balcony<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Our smaller fruit trees love a well-watered container.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fruit trees suitable for container use have dwarf rootstock to reduce growth, so all their energy goes into fruit production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Container-grown fruit trees need lots of water – don\u2019t let them dry out or the blossom and fruit will fall off. If you can commit to regular watering, a patio or balcony orchard is a great use of space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cherry<\/span> Mirabelle de Nancy\u00a0<\/span><\/a>or <\/span>half standard Gala apple<\/span><\/a> suit a container. Garden-grown Gala apples taste much better than their supermarket cousins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On a balcony, you could also grow gooseberries and <\/span>white currants<\/span><\/a> which are great plopped on ice cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s Downhill From Here<\/b><\/h4>\n

Just kidding. The top to the middle area of a slope is a good place to grow fruit because cold air sinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Early flowering fruit trees like dessert apple <\/span>Beauty of Bath<\/span><\/a> c<\/span>an end up with no fruits at all if there\u2019s a late frost, so positioning one at the top of a slope can work out well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Step-over cordons are also excellent on a slope. They only reach about 50 cms high and the fruit is produced low to the ground so they preserve the soil too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lawn<\/b><\/h4>\n

Do you actually need that lawn? Isn\u2019t it a pain to mow and fertilise all summer?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What about a series of stepover fruit trees or wire cordons with bark walkways – or a couple of full standards dotted throughout? We think lawns are overrated, use that space to grow tasty fruits instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome in the Pollinators<\/b><\/h4>\n

Pollinators like nothing better than fruit tree blossom. If you plant fruit trees they will come in droves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some fruit trees need a pollinating partner to fertilise their flowers and create fruits, so encouraging bees is important. Plant some <\/span>buddleia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>syringa<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>lavender<\/span><\/a> around the garden for extra temptation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>How About This Easy Orchard Design?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Buy a full standard or half standard quince<\/a> and a cherry for the border. Add a row of pleached pears trees<\/a> above the fence line, and two types of fruit cordons to partition off the patio. Add a fan-trained apple<\/a> to the wall and line the path with stepover cooking apples.<\/span><\/p>\n

Container grow a mulberry, cobnut<\/a>, and plum on the patio and put a half standard crab apple in the front garden.<\/span><\/p>\n
