Buddleia Davidii Royal Red - The Butterfly Bush
One easy way we can all help the declining butterfly population in the UK is to plant Buddleia Davidii Royal Red, most commonly known as The Butterfly Bush. This ornamental flowering shrub has large conical blooms at the end of arching branches - both fragrant and beautiful they are a magnet for pollinators, particularly attracting butterflies, they will cluster on the flowers, sometimes several will land on a single bloom.
The flowers are in fact small individual tubular flowers arranged as panicles. This particular variety, Buddleia Royal Red, has vibrant red flowers that become more magenta in colour as the blooms mature.
For a flash of colour, Buddleia Davidii Royal Red is an excellent choice for the mixed border, particularly in a cottage or English garden scheme and they grow well in an urban environment.
They are not fussy about soil or aspect but for the best show of flowers, do plant in the sunniest part of your garden. Dead-head the fading flowers to prolong the flowering period, this cultivar is very fragrant and is an excellent cut flower.
These deciduous shrubs are very hardy and a great choice for low maintenance gardens, in particular if you're creating a drought resistant border. Awarded the RHS AGM - Award of Garden Merit - a sure sign it will perform well in UK gardens.
