Aspidistra Elatior is a native of Japan and Taiwan with beautiful evergreen foliage and the ability to survive very low light and periods of neglect. Since 1822 it’s been called the Cast Iron Plant for its unmatched ability to survive dark Victorian homes. It’s never gone out of fashion and is rated today as an excellent air purifier and the toughest houseplant that ever existed. The RHS has awarded the AGM for its superb qualities. It has tall dark green ovate leaves with vein markings that sit upright on delicate long stems. It’s a slow grower used to native shady conditions beneath large trees with thick canopies and will make about 60 cms in height with leaves that stretch to 50 cms. Very rarely do its small white flowers bloom in spring.
If you’re looking for a tolerant plant to brighten a dark corner of the study or hallway Cast Iron Plant is the one for you. It will grow in the spaces other foliage plants have struggled with and won’t mind if you forget about it for a few weeks.

How To Water And Feed Aspidistra Elatior
Cast Iron Plant prefers to dry out before watering. Check it weekly and when the soil is dry down to a knuckle, soak it in a bucket or the sink before allowing the roots to drain. Don’t leave it in a tray of water because that will rot the roots. In winter it needs less water, often only monthly. In spring and summer use a liquid houseplant fertiliser every few weeks to keep those big leaves healthy. While it doesn’t require misting, wiping the dust from its leaves with a damp cloth each month helps it absorb what light you have given it.

How Much Light Does Aspidistra Elatior Need?
Cast Iron Plant will grow in low light or bright indirect light, but direct light will burn its leaves so keep it from brightly lit windows. It will cope with corners, hallways, and other low light spaces making it one of the most adaptable plants available.

Where To Put Aspidistra Elatior
There are two places you cannot put Cast Iron Plant. The first is in direct sunlight, the second is in front of a radiator. All other rooms and spaces are up for grabs with this almost unkillable beauty that lifts dark spaces and adds air-purifying colour where you thought it couldn’t be done.
