Castanea Sativa, a cherished cultivar better known as Sweet Chestnut or Spanish Chestnut, is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree. Noted for its attractive looks and the production of edible nuts, this tree is long cultivated and naturalised in the United Kingdom, believed to have been introduced by the Romans. The specimens we offer are trained as mature multi-stemmed and single-stemmed trees. As these are mature trees, they are an excellent choice for instant impact focus or mass planting.

In the spring, the foliage of the tree unfolds, revealing large, glossy leaves that can be up to 20 centimetres in size. The leaves are serrated and lance-shaped. Even though the dense foliage is quite lovely on its own, in July it becomes a backdrop for a profusion of yellow male and female catkins. The male flowers are followed by spiny fruit that contains the edible nuts. However, for a good nut crop in the autumn, the summer preceding it needs to be particularly hot. During winter, the attractive, shrubby habit of the tree and the roughly grooved bark offer interest.

As it is accustomed to temperate climates, Sweet Chestnut prefers well-drained soils and a location in full sun. When it comes to the type of soil, this deciduous tree is not picky. It will thrive in loamy, sandy or clay soils, and it tolerates acidic soils. Rarely affected by any serious pests or diseases. Once established, the cultivar is also drought resistant.

Even though it is not a native plant, Castanea Sativa is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. This tough ornamental tree will survive even if the temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero, and will not be bothered by strong winds. In fact, its high tolerance of harsh winds and salt sprays is what makes this a good choice tree for coastal gardens.

When choosing a place in the garden for Sweet Chestnut, you need to take its imposing size into consideration. Shaped as a multi-stemmed and already a mature tree, these specimens will eventually  grow to over 12 metres in height and over 8 metres in width. However, as it is a long-lived species, it will achieve its maximum size in a period of 20 to 50 years. Keeping Spanish Chestnut in great shape requires almost no effort. Routine removal of dead, damaged or congested shoots is all it takes to keep its multi-stemmed habit looking spectacular as always.

With highly-decorative foliage and an excellent summer interest, Castanea Sativa is a great candidate for a specimen tree. Its large size and multi-stemmed habit make it ideal for isolated planting, but, in large gardens, this cultivar can fit in beautifully in a mixed border.
