Cytisus Maria Burkwood is a large, deciduous shrub with dark pink and red pea-shaped flowers and sturdy arching branches. It prefers a hot sunny spot and tolerates drought so it’s a good choice for rock gardens and dry borders.

Cytisus are better known as Broom due to their bushy broom-head style branches. They’re native to Europe and vary from ground-covering varieties to tree size plants. Broom Maria Burkwood reaches about 1.5 metres tall and is covered in small, dark green leaves all along its upright branches. Broom flowers are usually similar to the flowers found on pea plants, except they present a myriad of different colours. Common Broom is yellow, and Warminster Broom is white, but Maria Burkwood’s flowers are both dark coral pink and red with touches of yellow at the outer edges. They grow in profusion between May and attract lots of pollinators in the early summer months.

This is an excellent broom for dry spots in the garden. It requires very little attention and always looks good. Not to be confused with the similarly named Cytisus Burkwoodii which is a different variety.

Height And Spread of Cytisus Maria Burkwood
Upright and spreading Cytisus Maria Burkwood can reach a height of 1.5 metres.

How Hardy Is Cytisus Maria Burkwood
This is a hardy broom that tolerates drought once established and enjoys a sunny position. It loses its foliage in winter but will survive below zero temperatures if its roots are well-drained. Pests are rarely a problem.

How To Use Cytisus Maria Burkwood
Broom Maria Burkwood is an upright structural shrub that suits both urban and country-style gardens. It prefers a spot in full sun to flower well, so a sunny fence line or hot front garden are good places. It also suits rock gardens, gravel gardens and coastal areas.
Because it’s so low maintenance Broom Maria Burkwood suits a hot, sunny wildlife garden where its pretty pea-shaped flowers attract bees and butterflies without any bother.

How To Care For Cytisus Maria Burkwood
Little care is required once Broom Maria Burkwood is established. It needs a hot sunny spot to thrive and produce lots of flowers, so south-facing walls or fences with shelter from cold wind is ideal. It will grow in the majority of soils including dry soil but may become chlorotic on shallow chalk.
Pruning isn’t generally required, but you cut new growth to restrict its height or tidy up unruly branches. Be sure not to cut old wood because it won’t regenerate.
