Fraxinus Angustifolia Raywood, or Narrow Leafed Ash Raywood, is an excellent foliage tree with a compact elegant habit, especially prized for its rich autumn colour, giving it the common name Claret Ash. Our standard specimens, with clear stems to 2 metres, are perfect for use in the landscape!

While Fraxinus Angustifolia originates in the eastern Mediterranean region, Fraxinus Angustifolia Raywood was discovered as a seedling in Australia in 1910, and was introduced to the UK in 1925. It has narrow, glossy bright green leaves with serrated edges, which create a feathered appearance and provide shade through the summer months, and then turn a brilliant purple-red in autumn, making it one of the stand-outs for autumn colour.

Hardy in most parts of the UK, Narrow Leafed Ash Raywood will grow to a mature height of more than 12 metres and spread of more than 8 metres in 20 to 50 years. It has a narrow, upright shape when young, but as it matures it forms a wide, rounded canopy. Little pruning is necessary. For planting in a row or a group, space trees 9-12 metres apart to account for its spreading as it matures.

Plant Fraxinus Angustifolia Raywood in full sun in an exposed or sheltered position in any moist but well-drained soil with an alkaline to neutral pH. Once established it is highly tolerant of drought, making it an excellent tree for dry spots. As it is sensitive to salt spray, Fraxinus Angustifolia Raywood should be sheltered from sea winds in coastal areas. However, it is tolerant of pollution, so will do well in city gardens. It is also deer resistant, and can be used on country properties without extra protection.

Our standard Fraxinus Angustifolia Raywood trees, with a clear stem to 2 metres, are an excellent choice for lining an avenue or walkway, where their feathery foliage makes for an attractive shade in summer before their magnificent autumn colour show. Their deep root systems will not interfere with pavement, and since they do not fruit, there is little to clean up beneath them. One Narrow Leafed Ash Raywood specimen would be a good focal point in a medium-sized lawn, and a group on a larger property would put on a particularly brilliant display in autumn!

Our standard Fraxinus Angustifolia Raywood trees are perfectly suited for use in landscape planning, their clear stems make for a small footprint at ground level, while their canopies of feathery leaves provide summer shade and autumn colour!
