Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie or Ash Westhof's Glorie, is a tough, hardy deciduous tree which is well-suited to a wide range of landscape applications. It is a variety of Fraxinus Excelsior which is the common ash tree. Our specimens are trained as standard trees on clear stems to 2 metres.

Selected in 1947 from a tree growing in the Netherlands, Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie is a popular choice for its resistance to city pollution. The narrow, oval upright crown of Ash Westhof's Glorie will become more round as it matures, and its dense structure makes it a good shade tree for hot summer months. The pinnate leaves, up to 40 cm long with 9-11 leaflets, are bronze when they emerge in late spring, later turning a dark, glossy green. Small purple flowers bloom in April and May, rarely followed by fruits. The leaves turn yellow before they fall in autumn.

Height and Spread of Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie
Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie will grow at a rate of 40 cm a year to a height of 12 metres and spread of 4-8 metres in 20 years, eventually reaching a mature height of 25 metres and width of 12-15 metres.

How Hardy Is Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie?
Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie is hardy across all of the UK and northern Europe.

How to Use Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie
Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie is an excellent tree for streetside planting, as its narrow crown and tidy foliage habit require little maintenance. It will also serve well as a windbreak in coastal regions, and in woodland settings, where its rapid growth and dense crown make it a good canopy tree to shade understorey specimens. Ash Westhof's Glorie should be planted with consideration for its eventual large size: this is not a tree for small gardens!

How to Care for Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie
Plant Fraxinus Excelsior Westhof's Glorie in full sun in any sheltered or exposed position in moist but well-drained chalk, sand or clay soil with an alkaline to neutral pH. Very tolerant of aerosol salt and resistant to wind, it is an excellent tree for use in coastal regions, and its high tolerance for pollution makes Ash Westhof's Glorie ideal for city plantings.
