Fargesia Robusta Wolong
The exceptionally long leaves of the Fargesia Robusta Wolong bamboo offers a tropical look to any garden setting. The leaves are a dark shiny green that appear to glisten and reflect the sunlight. The branch sheaths add even more visual interest to this eye-catching bamboo. Each sheath sports a striking orange or red hue. In the spring, at the base of the clumping bamboo, the plant’s new shoots appear in shades of brilliant rusty orange and are covered in fine hairs.
Fully grown culms of the Fargesia Robusta Wolong stand up to 5 meters in height. The mature culms measure 2 centimetres in diameter. The culms grow rapidly and will usually stand 3 meters after four years of growth.
A tall bamboo, the Fargesia robusta Wolong makes an ideal evergreen screening hedge because of its tight clumping habit that forms a dense visual barrier. Unlike other varieties of bamboo, it is non-invasive and grows in a neat and tidy clump pattern. The foliage of the Wolong bamboo is deer resistant which makes it an ideal bamboo choice for a woodland garden setting.
Fargesia Wolong is somewhat sun tolerant but in areas that experience overly hot summers, the leaves can curl if exposed to direct hot afternoon sunlight. For ideal growth, the bamboo should be planted in an area where it receives morning sunlight and afternoon shade.
Wolong bamboo prefers well-draining soil that is high in organic content. Its clumping growth habit makes it an acceptable potted plant for a patio if the pot is large enough to accommodate the bamboo’s root system.
Fargesia robusta Wolong can survive temperatures down to -17 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is forecast to drop lower than the bamboo will require some cold protection to resist damage or death.
If you are seeking a bamboo plant that provides visual beauty, dense growth, and a contained clumping growth then look no further than the Fargesia robusta Wolong. It will bring a tropical feel to any garden with its large shiny leaves and brilliantly shaded culms.
