Ilex x Altaclerensis Lawsoniana also called Holly Lawsonia, is a perfect shrub for screening and hedging. This is a bushy evergreen holly shrub which grows up to 6m tall with variegated spineless leaves, golden-green in the centre. Small white flowers and red-orange berries. The brightly variegated foliage will provide year-round interest in your garden, acting as a colourful constract to other plants in your garden. In autumn and winter, you have the added pop of colour from the bright berries. Ilex Lawsoniana has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its many desirable qualities.
A cross between the native English holly and a variety from the Madeira, Azores, and Canary Islands, Ilex x altaclerensis Lawsoniana has almost spineless medium green leaves, with irregular yellow and green splotches in the centre. In spring and early summer the small white flowers appear, and are very attractive to bees. The flowers are followed by red-orange berries in the autumn, persisting through the winter and attracting birds to your garden. As it grows, Holly Lawsonia takes on a pyramidal form.
Hardy throughout the UK, Holly Lawsonia will grow slowly to a full height of 4-8 metres and spread of 2.5-4 metres in a period of 20 to 50 years. It can be pruned to maintain a desired shape or size. Stems which revert to fully green leaves should be cut out entirely. For a hedge, space Ilex x altaclerensis lawsoniana plants 60 cm apart.
Ilex x altaclerensis lawsoniana will do best in full sun, although it can also be grown successfully in partial or full shade. Plant it in any well-drained, humus-rich soil in an exposed or sheltered position. Resistant to deer and rabbits, Holly Lawsonia is a good selection for a country property. As well, Ilex x altaclerensis lawsoniana is salt tolerant, so will do well in a coastal region. Since it does not like to be moved once established, make sure that you find the right spot for it the first time!
Holly Lawsonia is a great specimen or hedging plant. One planted at the back of a flower border will complement flowering plants in season, and then provide its own colour with its vibrant foliage and bright red berries in winter. Ilex x altaclerensis lawsoniana is an excellent choice for a hedge, as its dense growth habit and evergreen foliage will provide a reliable year-round screen, and it responds well to pruning for shape and size.
Ilex x altaclerensis lawsoniana is a hardy, attractive choice for a landscape plant in both city and country gardens. Its colourful leaves and bright red berries will make it an all-year favourite in your garden!
