Banana Siam Ruby, also known as Musa Siam Ruby, is a large banana plant that originates from Papua New Guinea, but grows well in the UK if kept in a sunny spot. In the right spot, it will provide you with fantastic tropical, jungle-like foliage for your garden. It is possibly also called Musa Acuminata Siam Ruby but no one quite knows for sure.
This huge tropical banana makes a bold statement in the garden. Its foliage is large and ruby red but flecked with green. Individual plants have different markings. Younger Siam Ruby plants begin life almost entirely green but then develop red marks with sun exposure. The more sun a Musa Siam Ruby receives the more intense the red patches will appear.
Musa Siam Ruby is a deciduous perennial, dropping its leaves each year only to grow larger more extravagant ones the following summer. It is fast growing in the right conditions, reaching six to eight feet tall and up to six foot wide. It needs space to grow so best suits a larger garden or a border with plenty of room.
How Hardy Is Musa Siam Ruby?
Musa Siam Ruby needs a very sunny spot to thrive and possibly protection over winter. You can either wrap your Banana Siam Ruby in fleece or dig it up and move into a greenhouse until the frosts have passed. Overall, Musa Siam Ruby is probably equally hardy as Musa Basjoo, which is the hardiest banana on the planet.
How To Use Musa Siam Ruby
Musa Siam Ruby is perfect for a tropical-style garden or as a back drop for smaller tropical plants. It looks good with large stones or water features.
Alternately Musa Siam Ruby makes a standout specimen plant on the patio as it grows well in a container. Gardeners who like the look of large lush leaves can use Musa Siam Ruby to create jungle-like foliage displays. It’s is very tactile plant and difficult to resist touching the palm-like leaves.
How To Care For Musa Siam Ruby
Banana Siam Ruby needs heat and light, so chose the sunniest spot you have. If it’s touched by frost the foliage is likely to droop, so keep an eye on the temperature and shelter your Musa Siam Ruby accordingly.
Ornamental bananas like moist, well-drained soil. They will thrive if you mulch them regularly with organic matter and feed with general purpose fertiliser.
Both young and more established banana plants are thirsty and need plenty of water throughout the summer. You can remove damaged or dead foliage as it appears.
