Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger, also called Red Darjeeling Banana, is a moderately hardy banana variety with dramatically red-striped leaves. While there are many varieties and cultivars of the Musa family are banana, Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger is quite hardy (for a banana) as a result of it mountain origins. Originating in the north-east Himalayan state of Sikkim in India, Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger was recently introduced to the UK. It has many names including Red Darjeeling Banana, Indian Banana Plant or Sikkim Banana Tree.
The cultivar Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger has large tropical foliage that is green but has red horizontal stripes (rather like a tiger except stripes are red). Red Darjeeling Banana will add a dramatic flair to your garden with its huge leaves streaked with horizontal stripes in shades of red. In summer, mature plants more than 5 years old will produce long-lasting yellow flowers followed by inedible purple fruits. It will grow very strongly through the cooler autumn months before winter sets in.
Red Darjeeling Banana will grow back from the roots each year if exposed to temperatures down to -10 C, making it as hardy as Musa Basjoo. To provide extra protectio over the winter, tie up the leaves into a single column and surround with a tube of fleece or burlap filled with straw or leaves, topped with a plastic pail or covered with a tarpaulin to protect from winter rains. Larger plants can be surrounded by a wooden cage filled with straw. Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger will reach a height and spread of 4 metres in 5 or more years. If necessary for winter protection or moving inside, the stem can be cut back to a manageable height in the autumn.
Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger should be planted out in full sun in a sheltered position, protected from winds that could damage the large leaves. It will thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It is very important that the soil not be wet through the winter months. During the growing season, apply high-nitrogen feed liberally to support its vigorous growth. Mulch the roots well to protect them over winter.
Use your Red Darjeeling Banana to create a tropical feel, whether planted in the garden directly or grown in a container for easy winter protection inside. Its bushy shape and dramatic leaves would make a stunning show in a rooftop terrace or patio, and then can be moved inside to a conservatory or sunny window for the winter months.
With its hardiness and exotically red-striped leaves, Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger will be a stand-out addition to your tropical English garden!
