Calathea Orbifolia is an unusual houseplant with large round two-tone silver-striped leaves that fold together at night. It’s a bold houseplant that’s easy-care and loves to soak up humidity in your bathroom. It’s native to the Bolivian rainforest floor and part of the prayer plant family because its leaves fold at night as if praying and open again just before sunrise. Some folk call it a Peacock Plant because the leaves open and fold like a peacock’s tail – either way Goeppertia Orbifolia is a very handsome plant that grows beneath huge trees in the rainforest and has leafy foliage to catch dappled light. It loves humidity and needs damp soil to thrive – if you do a good job yours will grow a metre tall because each new leaf increases in size. If you don’t have a spare bathroom spot then misting it will work too. Goeppertia Orbifolia is an excellent air purifier so it suits living spaces and bedrooms and it isn’t toxic to pets.

How To Water And Feed Calathea Orbifolia
It’s a rainforest floor native so Peacock Plant needs consistently damp soil and shouldn’t dry out. Check the soil twice a week and when it’s dry down to a few centimetres soak it in the sink and let the pot drain before replacing it. Although it needs damp soil, soggy roots will quickly rot. Mist the leaves every other day if it’s not in a bathroom and if it’s kept in bright light feed it with a dilute houseplant fertiliser every month in the spring and summer months. In shade, it’ll only need fertiliser on occasion. Those large leaves attract lots of dust so wipe them down with a damp cloth each week or hose it down in a gentle shower to keep its air-purifying qualities in tip-top shade.

How Much Light Does Calathea Orbifolia Need
Peacock plant likes shade to bright indirect light, with a leaning towards the light side. Direct sunlight will scorch its leafy foliage so keep it out of directly sunny spots.

Where To Put Calathea Orbifolia
The best place for Goeppertia Orbifolia is an indirectly lit spot in a steamy bathroom, but it will grow in most indirectly sunny positions if you have the mister on standby.  Dining tables, a chest of drawers, work desks, and north-facing windows are all good places for a peacock plant to make a bold, stripy statement in your home.
