Pittosporum Tenuifolium Purpureum is large evergreen shrub with tiny fragrant purple flowers. It creates excellent hedging and windbreaks in coastal areas

Pittosporum Tenuifolium is native to New Zealand but the variety Purpureum is said to have been found by chance in Australia. It’s more commonly called Purple New Zealand Pittosporum. As its name suggests this variety has deep bronze purple foliage that’s shiny, leathery and waxy edged. New foliage emerges pale green and matures to a deep bronze-purple over the summer months. The stems are dark which provides a contrasting foil for new foliage and established leaves.

In springtime tiny purple bell-shaped flowers appear. They are very small but highly fragrant and leave people wondering where the scent is coming from. The flowers mature into tiny black capsules.

Height And Spread of Pittosporum Tenuifolium Purpureum
Purple New Zealand Pittosporum is fast growing and can reach several metres in height and spread within a few years, but can be kept smaller with pruning. It grows in a rounded habit and forms dense foliage.

How Hardy Is Pittosporum Tenuifolium Purpureum
Pittosporums thrive in warmer areas of the UK and can be damaged by severe frosts. In colder areas it should be placed in a sheltered frost-free spot.

How To Use For Pittosporum Tenuifolium Purpureum
This a good hedging or windbreak shrub for coastal areas as its evergreen foliage enjoys the warmer conditions and it’s not damaged by coastal sprays.

Purple New Zealand Pittosporum also makes a good specimen shrub with its unusual leaves and suits a wildlife garden where pollinators can enjoy its highly scented flowers.

How To Care For Pittosporum Tenuifolium Purpureum
Purple New Zealand Pittosporum needs a sunny frost-free environment to thrive. It does best against a sunny wall or fence and will grow in most soils except water logged areas.

There is no need to prune this ornamental shrub but if you want to control its height or remove wayward branches do so in late winter.

A thick layer of mulch around the roots in spring helps trap moisture and boosts nutrients for the growing season.
