Quercus Cerris, better known as Turkey Oak, is a vigorous variety with a spreading habit. It is appreciated for its resilience, glossy foliage and unusual fruit capsules. With its attractive appearance and requiring little care, this deciduous tree is an excellent choice for a specimen tree in large gardens. The specimens we offer for sale are already trained as multi-stemmed trees.

Quercus Cerris foliage consists of glossy, dark green leaves, ranging from deeply lobed to oblong.  Densely assorted throughout the multiple stems, the leaves have a greyish, felted underside. In the spring, long, reddish catkins appear on the tree, followed by fruit. The acorns are not typical for the species, as they are orange at the tips, with brownish-green tops, and unusual fruit capsule. The acorn cap is spiky and shaggy, and it is often compared to moss.

Undemanding when it comes to growing conditions, Turkey Oak will thrive even on shallow, chalky soils. This cultivar tolerates full sun to partial shade, and both exposed and sheltered locations in the garden. When choosing a spot for planting, make sure to take into account the deep, spreading root system of tree and its imposing size in maturity. With a fast growth rate, this multi-stemmed oak tree will achieve a maximum height of 30 metres and width well over 10 metres.

Although native to areas in South East Europe and Asia, Quercus Cerris was reintroduced to the United Kingdom in the 18th century. Fully hardy all over the British Isles, this oak cultivar can survive even if the temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero. It does not mind frosts or harsh winds, and it is ideally suited to serve as a windbreak.

Easy to grow and to care for, Turkey Oak will not need any special treatment to flourish. To keep its multi-stemmed habit in shape, simply remove any dead or damaged shoots. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring.

A reliable oak variety of stately habit, Quercus Cerris is an excellent choice for a focus of interest in larger gardens. Its leathery, dense foliage offers texture for the better part of the year, and its elegant form fits into any landscape. Planted en masse, this cultivar can be used for informal screening. Add it to a mixed shrub border as a back row plant, where its impressive size and attractive foliage will provide an effective backdrop for showier cultivars.

Make sure to take a look at our selection of large and mature trees. Lots more choice of trees with good autumn colour on our deciduous trees collection.
