Quercus Coccinea or Scarlet Oak
Quercus Coccinea is an excellent deciduous tree which puts on a brilliant show of autumn colour! Native to eastern North America, the Scarlet Oak was introduced to the UK in 1691 when the Bishop of London had some planted at Fulham Palace. The tall tree has a narrow crown in its earlier years, and then forms a rounded, spreading crown as it matures. Its glossy green leaves are deeply lobed and up to 18 cm long, and in autumn they are turn a blazing bright red, starting from the bottom branches and working its way up to the top. The long-lasting foliage display can persist into December.

Height and Spread of Quercus Coccinea
Quercus Coccinea will grow to a height of 6 metres in 10 years and 12 metres in 20 years, finally reaching a mature height of 20 metres and spread of 15 metres in more than 50 years.

How Hardy Is Quercus Coccinea?
Quercus Coccinea is fully hardy in all parts of the UK and across northern Europe.

How to Use Quercus Coccinea
Quercus Coccinea is an excellent low-maintenance tree for large landscapes. It should be sited bearing in mind its eventual large size: this is a tree to plant for future generations! It makes a striking focal point in a large lawn, where its attractive glossy green leaves will create a shady spot in the hot summer, before putting on their brilliant show in autumn! Since it tolerates pollution, it is a good tree for street-side plantings, as long as there is room for it to grow. A grouping of Scarlet Oak as mature trees on a larger property would be a stunning sight in autumn!

How to Care for Quercus Coccinea
Plant Quercus Coccinea in full sun or partial shade in an exposed or sheltered position with a south, east or west-facing aspect, in any moist but well-drained or well-drained soil with an acid to neutral pH. For the best autumn colour, find a spot with full sun and acid soil. While it will grow happily in a gravelly soil, it will also do well in wetter spots. Scarlet Oak has a moderate salt tolerance, making it suitable for coastal regions, and also is tolerant of pollution, so it’s perfect for city locations.

Quercus Coccinea is a hardy, long-lived deciduous tree which will put on a spectacular foliage show in autumn!
