A member of the English Oak family, Quercus Robur Koster is a deciduous tree with a narrow, columnar habit and upright branches. This popular Oak cultivar was previously widely grown as Quercus Robur Fastigiata. It is ideally suited for gardens with limited space, mainly as a specimen tree.

The dense foliage of this elegant oak tree is glossy and deep green. Its variable, lobed leaves are obovate to oval. This variety of the English Oak has slightly larger leaves than its relatives which form a tight, upright crown. Its erect branches do not start drooping with age, so this variety keeps its columnar habit as it matures. In the spring, inconspicuous flowers appear on the tree, followed by acorns. Koster Oak has good autumn colour as its lush foliage turns to warm shades of brown.

Height and Spread of Quercus Robur Fastigiata Koster
With a narrow, columnar habit, Koster Oak is suitable for both small and large spaces. The ultimate size it can achieve is up to 15 metres high and up to 8 metres wide.

How Hardy Is Quercus Robur Fastigiata Koster
Robust and adaptable, this deciduous cultivar is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. For its reliable performance and outstanding qualities, Quercus Robur Koster received the esteemed Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.

How To Use Quercus Robur Fastigiata Koster
The timeless beauty of its elegant form and glossy foliage make Koster Oak quite a versatile cultivar. It will fit in splendidly in gardens where space is limited, as a focus of interest, as well as in large estates, where it can be used as a formal, tall hedge.

Due to its columnar habit, this deciduous cultivar is a great candidate for lining avenues or adding architectural and structural value to your garden. When planted en masse, Quercus Robur Koster will serve as a perfect backdrop for showier, flowering varieties, such as Magnolia or Tree Peony.

How To Care For Quercus Robur Fastigiata Koster
Koster Oak will do well in any soil, including lime, as long as they are deep and fertile, and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. As it is not bothered by urban pollution, this variety is an excellent choice for a city garden.

When it comes to maintaining the beautiful fastigiate form of this tree, no routine pruning is necessary to keep it. Simply remove any diseased, damaged, or congested shoots from the tree to keep it healthy and thriving.

Slender and elegant, Koster Oak is a versatile tree that lends itself well to various uses in the garden. Use it in hedging, for lining avenues or as a stunning specimen tree in gardens where space is limited.
