Red Oak, or to give it its full botanical name, Quercus Rubra, is a large deciduous tree prized for its attractive foliage. Fast-growing and undemanding, red oak performs well as a specimen tree and in mixed shrub borders. The specimens we offer for sale are Full Standard Trees.

The deeply lobed leaves, typical for the oak species, emerge glossy and deep green, creating a dense canopy. In the autumn, the lustrous foliage turns to beautiful hues of reddish-brown, hence the variety’s name. During summer, the tree will display insignificant, green flowers, followed by fruit. Although Quercus Rubra does produce acorns, it might take a few decades before it is able to produce an abundant crop.

Native to Eastern North America, this vigorous oak naturally occurs on wooded slopes, and prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils. Although it will perform well in partial shade, to encourage vibrant autumn colour of the foliage, choose a spot in full sun. Rarely affected by serious pests and diseases, and suitable for both sheltered and exposed locations.

Tough and sturdy, Quercus Rubra can survive in the severest European climates. Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this ornamental tree will not be bothered by frost or harsh, cold winds. Once established, it tolerates drought and urban pollution.

As well as in its natural form, Red Oak looks impressive in any landscape. Bushy, with a fast growth rate, this deciduous tree can grow to be up to 30 metres high and over 10 metres wide. Keeping its imposing form tidy and neat requires no regular pruning. To prevent contraction of fungal diseases and maintain the plant’s good health, routinely remove any dead or damaged growth from the tree.

Oak varieties are particularly sought after for their exceptional performance in the landscape and their decorative foliage. Red Oak has all the noteworthy qualities of its close relatives, but offers very impressive autumn colours. Long-lived and easy to care for, Quercus Rubra is an excellent choice for a specimen tree in a large garden, or as a part of mixed shrub borders.
