Quercus Rhysophylla Maya is a truly superb evergreen oak, known also as the Loquat or Mexican Oak. It has with large leathery leaves that are a superb orange / red / purple colour when young. Quite rare, this colourful evergreen oak makes an excellent alternative to the more common Holm Oak (Quercus ilex).
Trained as a full standard shape, we recommend these Quercus Rhysophylla Maya clear stem trees for use as above fence evergreen screening to create an elegant privacy wall.
Native to northern Mexico, Quercus Rhysophylla Maya was introduced to European gardeners in 2006. It is notable for its evergreen foliage, consisting of leathery, lance-shaped leaves up to 25 cm long. New leaves in spring are a rich purple shade, changing to dark green as they mature. There may also be purple new growth in late summer.
Fully hardy throughout the UK, the Mexican Oak Tree will grow fairly quickly to a mature height of 8 metres and spread of 4 - 8 metres. Quercus Rhysophylla Maya should be planted in a position sheltered from wind in full sun or dappled shade, in moist but well-drained fertile soil. Once it is established it is extremely drought tolerant.
The evergreen foliage of Mexican Oak Tree makes it a good choice for use as a screen or barrier. In a small city garden it can provide a buffer from traffic, and can be used in containers for a rooftop terrace or courtyard garden, where its year-round leaves will give winter interest. It is also suitable for streetside planting in pavement. On a larger country property, a grouping of Quercus Rhysophylla Maya trees would create an attractive spot in the landscape, as well as providing shade.
Quercus Rhysophylla Maya has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
