Banana
From our London based nursery, we specialise in tropical and Mediterranean plants which can be grown in the UK. One of our most popular hardy exotics is the banana plant or tree – a wonderfully luscious and architecturally striking addition to any garden. The hardy banana plants for sale include the Musa Bajoo, the ornamental Musa Maurelli and the Musella Lasiocarpa or Chinese dwarf banana.
These banana plants are all root hardy. With some straight forward preparation for the English winter, such as wrapping the stems in fleece before the first frost, these banana plants will come back again impressively the following summer. However, even if unprotected through the winter, while the stems will die back to ground level, green shoots should reappear again in late spring.
The impressive hardy Musa Bajoo (Japanese Banana) grows to a maximum height of 4 metres. It is widely acknowledged as the most hardy banana plant and has been successfully grown here in the UK for many years. For an immediate impact in your garden, we can supply the Musa Bajoo in sizes of up to 1.5 metres. The Musa Maurelli or red banana plant is grown for its striking foliage - with red leaves on the lower plant and green leaves with red streaks on long red stems above. The Musella Lasiocarpa is renowned for its long lasting and striking flower.
