Baccharis Genistelloides, commonly known as Carqueja, is a small evergreen tropical shrub with a fascinating structural form and a long legacy of medicinal use. Native to South America, this hardy perennial is prized for its health-supporting properties and is an intriguing addition to any warm, sheltered UK garden.
This compact, architectural shrub grows to around 60cm tall in the UK. Rather than traditional foliage, Carqueja displays upright, bright green, leafless stems which serve as the plant’s main photosynthetic organs. The stems create a distinctive vertical silhouette that adds a sculptural quality to planting schemes. From late summer into autumn, Baccharis Genistelloides produces small, creamy yellow flowerheads at the top of its stems, providing a gentle seasonal accent. Although understated, the flowers are rich in nectar and may attract pollinators in warmer months. The plant belongs to the large Asteraceae family and originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, especially Brazil, Argentina and Peru. It has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples, and is still widely valued in modern herbal traditions, particularly for supporting liver function and digestive health.
Height and Width of Baccharis Genistelloides
In the UK climate, expect Baccharis Genistelloides to reach approximately 60cm in height and around 40cm in spread. Its upright habit makes it ideal for small spaces, plant containers or borders.
How Hardy is Baccharis Genistelloides?
Carqueja is a tropical perennial, so it requires protection from frost and cold winds. It is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory or sheltered courtyard garden in the UK. It will tolerate short periods of cooler temperatures but must be overwintered indoors or under glass in most parts of the country.
Uses in Garden and / or Landscape
This is a brilliant choice for gardeners who enjoy growing rare or unusual plants with a story. Carqueja’s upright form works beautifully in pots or raised beds, where its medicinal reputation and architectural silhouette can take centre stage. In warmer microclimates, it may be grown in mixed herbaceous or medicinal borders.
Care Tips
Plant Baccharis Genistelloides in a free-draining, gritty compost and position it in full sun. Water sparingly, especially in winter, as it is naturally adapted to poor soils and dry conditions. Prune lightly in spring to remove any winter damage and encourage strong upright growth. Bring under cover before the first frost in autumn.
