Dryopteris Cristata or Crested Buckler Fern

Dryopteris Cristata, commonly known as Crested Buckler Fern or Crested Wood Fern, is a hardy, clump-forming fern with fresh green foliage and an elegant, naturally architectural shape. Its distinctive fronds form attractive leafy clumps, bringing texture and structure to shaded parts of the garden. Semi-evergreen overall, with the shorter sterile fronds remaining evergreen, Dryopteris Cristata is particularly useful for woodland-style planting, shady borders and underplanting trees and shrubs. Native to Britain and exceptionally hardy, it is an excellent choice for creating lush, natural-looking planting in cool, moist areas of the garden.

Dryopteris Cristata develops two subtly different types of frond, giving the plant a particularly interesting shape. The fertile fronds are taller and more upright, with widely spaced leaflets, while the shorter sterile fronds have a more arching habit and remain evergreen. Together they create a layered clump of attractive green foliage with a combination of upright structure and softer growth around the base.

Unlike flowering perennials, the appeal of Crested Buckler Fern comes from foliage, form and texture. Fresh fronds develop during spring and mature into an elegant leafy display through summer. The plant produces no flowers, instead reproducing by spores carried on the fertile fronds.

Dryopteris Cristata is native across parts of Europe and northern Asia as well as North America, and Britain forms part of its natural range. This makes Crested Wood Fern particularly appropriate for naturalistic and woodland-inspired gardens where native or naturally occurring species are preferred.

Its preference for consistently moist conditions also distinguishes it from some other commonly grown Dryopteris. Crested Buckler Fern is especially at home in damp woodland conditions and other cool, moisture-retentive positions, although established plants should not normally be left standing permanently in water.

For companion planting, Dryopteris Cristata works beautifully with Hostas and Astrantia in a moist, partially shaded border. The broad leaves of Hostas provide a strong contrast to the finely divided fern fronds, while Astrantia introduces delicate summer flowers without disturbing the cool woodland character of the planting.

Height and Spread of Dryopteris Cristata

Dryopteris Cristata generally reaches around 30–50 cm in height, with mature clumps spreading approximately 50–100 cm. The taller fertile fronds create the greatest height, while the shorter arching sterile foliage fills out the base of the plant. Its clump-forming rather than aggressively spreading habit makes Crested Wood Fern easy to incorporate beneath shrubs or amongst other shade-loving perennials.

How Hardy is Dryopteris Cristata?

Dryopteris Cristata is exceptionally hardy and is suitable for gardens throughout the UK, including areas experiencing severe winter frosts.

Crested Buckler Fern is best grown in partial or full shade in moist, humus-rich soil. Neutral to acid soil is preferable and a sheltered position protected from strong drying winds will help keep the fronds looking their best.

Although Dryopteris as a genus can become tolerant of relatively dry shade once established, Dryopteris Cristata is a particularly good choice for the damper end of the shade garden. Avoid allowing newly planted specimens to dry out while their roots become established.

Uses in Garden and Landscape

Dryopteris Cristata is an excellent foliage plant for woodland gardens, shady borders and areas beneath established trees and shrubs. Its combination of upright and arching fronds provides structure without appearing rigid, allowing it to blend naturally with other woodland plants.

Crested Wood Fern is particularly useful for introducing lush green foliage into north- and east-facing positions where sun-loving flowering plants may struggle. It can be planted individually amongst other shade perennials or repeated through a larger woodland scheme to create a more natural effect.

Its British native status also makes Crested Buckler Fern an interesting choice for naturalistic gardens and planting schemes inspired by native woodland vegetation. The green fronds provide an attractive foil for flowering shade plants while maintaining interest after many woodland flowers have finished.

Care Tips

Dryopteris Cristata is an easy and low-maintenance fern when given suitable conditions. Plant during spring or autumn in moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Water well after planting and maintain adequate moisture during dry weather, particularly while the plant is becoming established.

Little pruning is required. Old, damaged or untidy fronds can simply be removed when necessary, taking care not to damage the fresh growth emerging from the centre of the plant. An annual mulch of leaf mould, garden compost or other organic matter helps conserve soil moisture and recreates the rich conditions of a woodland floor.

Once established, Crested Wood Fern can remain in place for many years, gradually developing into a handsome leafy clump requiring very little intervention.
