Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon Sea Holly

Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon is a striking, hardy deciduous perennial grown for its intensely coloured summer display of electric-blue flowers, spiky blue bracts and blue-flushed stems. Also known as Sea Holly or Blue Eryngo, it forms a neat clump of green foliage in spring before producing distinctive branching flower stems from summer into early autumn. Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon is particularly effective in sunny borders, gravel gardens and contemporary planting schemes, where its architectural form provides a strong contrast to softer flowering perennials and ornamental grasses. Drought tolerant once established and highly attractive to pollinating insects, it is an excellent choice for sunny, well-drained gardens.

Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon, cultivar name 'Kolmblula', is an upright, clump-forming perennial with a distinctive architectural appearance. Its green foliage provides a relatively restrained foundation from which the strongly coloured flowering stems emerge, creating considerable height and structure without forming a heavy mass of foliage.

The main display develops during summer, when branching stems become increasingly suffused with vivid blue. Small blue flowers are packed into compact, cone-like flower heads surrounded by sharply pointed metallic-blue bracts. The combination of blue flowers, bracts and upper stems gives Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon an unusually intense colour and makes the flower heads appear almost sculptural.

The flowering period extends through summer and can continue into early autumn. As the flowers mature, the seed heads retain their distinctive shape and remain attractive even after the brightest colour has faded. They can be left standing to provide structure later in the season or cut for use in fresh and dried flower arrangements.

Magical Blue Lagoon is the trade name for the protected cultivar 'Kolmblula'. Although it has often been sold as Eryngium planum Magical Blue Lagoon, it is now generally listed simply as Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon ('Kolmblula' PBR) within the Magical Series.

For companion planting, Sea Holly works particularly well with Echinacea and Stipa tenuissima. The softer daisy-like Echinacea flowers provide a pleasing contrast to the spiky blue flower heads, while the fine, moving foliage of Stipa emphasises the strong architectural form of Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon.

Height and Spread of Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon

Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon develops into an upright perennial approximately 60–90 cm high and 30–50 cm wide when mature. The flower stems provide most of its height, rising clearly above the basal foliage to create an airy rather than bulky vertical accent.

Its relatively narrow spread makes Eryngium Blue Lagoon particularly useful for adding height and structure without occupying excessive border space. Several plants can also be repeated through a planting scheme to create rhythm and strong points of summer colour.

How Hardy is Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon?

Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon is a hardy perennial suitable for growing outdoors in UK gardens. It performs best in full sun, where strong light encourages sturdy growth and helps develop the intense blue colouring for which the cultivar is valued.

Good drainage is particularly important. Sea Holly thrives in well-drained soils and is well suited to lighter, sandy or gravelly ground. It can also grow successfully in other soil types provided excess winter moisture can drain freely. Once established, its ability to tolerate relatively dry conditions makes it a useful choice for sunny gardens where lower-maintenance planting is desirable.

Avoid planting Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon in persistently wet or waterlogged ground, particularly during winter. An open, sunny position with free-draining soil provides the best conditions for strong flowering and long-term performance.

Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon is particularly effective where a strong architectural element is required within a sunny planting scheme. Its upright stems and metallic-blue flower heads work beautifully in mixed perennial borders, gravel gardens, Mediterranean-style schemes and contemporary landscapes.

The intense blue colouring is especially valuable among plants flowering in warmer pink, purple, yellow or orange shades. The flower heads also contrast effectively with softer, billowing perennials and grasses, helping to introduce definition and structure into naturalistic or prairie-style planting.

Sea Holly is also a valuable plant for wildlife-friendly gardens. Its numerous small flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects during summer, adding ecological value alongside its ornamental appeal.

Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon is an excellent cut flower, and its strong stems and distinctive flower heads can be used in both fresh arrangements and dried displays. Alternatively, leave the spent flower heads standing after flowering to prolong their architectural contribution to the border.

Care Tips

Plant Eryngium Magical Blue Lagoon in a sunny position with freely draining soil. Water regularly during the first growing season while the roots establish, but avoid keeping the soil continually wet. Once established, Sea Holly is relatively drought tolerant and generally requires little supplementary watering under normal garden conditions.

Eryngiums develop substantial root systems and are best planted where they can remain undisturbed. Avoid unnecessary moving or division of established plants. They also perform best without excessive feeding, as overly rich conditions can encourage softer growth at the expense of the compact, sturdy habit that makes the plant so attractive.

Spent flowering stems can be cut back after flowering if a tidy appearance is preferred, although leaving them standing allows the attractive seed heads to provide additional structure. Cut old growth back before fresh shoots develop in spring.
