View plant size:Lonicera Nitida Compact, also known as Shrubby Honeysuckle or Boxleaf Honeysuckle Compact, is a versatile evergreen shrub valued for its neat and tidy growth habit. With its naturally compact form, it is a popular alternative to traditional box hedging and an excellent choice for creating low, formal borders, edging, or small topiary. This variety has been specially selected for its slower growth and dense foliage, making it easier to manage than standard Lonicera Nitida.
This honeysuckle shrub is grown primarily for its fine-textured, glossy, dark green leaves that are small and closely packed along the stems, giving the plant a very refined appearance. Unlike more vigorous forms of Lonicera Nitida such as Lonicera nitida Baggesen’s Gold, the Compact variety has a restrained growth habit, meaning less frequent trimming is needed to maintain shape. In spring, clusters of tiny creamy-white flowers appear, followed by purple-blue berries that attract birds. While the flowers are not particularly showy, they are a bonus feature, adding seasonal interest and wildlife value.
Height and Width of Lonicera Nitida Compact:
Lonicera Nitida Compact grows to around 1 to 1.2 metres tall with a spread of about 1 metre, making it smaller and very manageable. Its slow, bushy growth makes it especially suited to neat low hedging.
How hardy is Lonicera Nitida Compact?
Fully hardy throughout the UK, Lonicera Nitida Compact tolerates temperatures well below freezing. It is also highly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soils, and will thrive in full sun or partial shade. Its resilience and evergreen nature make it a reliable structural plant in the garden year-round.
Uses in Garden and/or Landscape:
This compact form is perfect as an alternative to Buxus sempervirens, particularly in areas where box blight or box moth is a concern. It works beautifully as a low hedge, in knot gardens. In larger borders, it can be used as a structural planting partner to perennials and flowering shrubs, or left untrimmed for a naturally rounded, informal shape. Its berries also provide a food source for birds, increasing its value in wildlife-friendly gardens.
Care Tips
Lonicera Nitida Compact is easy to grow and low maintenance. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or shade, though the densest growth is achieved with more light. Light trimming once or twice a year is usually sufficient to maintain shape, especially if grown as a hedge or topiary. Water well during dry spells in the first year to help establish a strong root system, and mulch annually to conserve soil moisture. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and very resilient.
