Magnolia Joli Pom Pom is a small deciduous flowering magnolia with pure white petals and bright pink stamens. It’s an unusual magnolia for mixed borders and a stunning ornamental specimen tree.

Magnolias are found in the fossil record dating back at least 95 million years, they are one of the oldest flowers we have. Magnolias once grew wild across the world, but today they are only native to the Far East and Southern America. Magnolias were named after the French explorer Pierre Magnol in the 1500s and the first to arrive in Britain was bought by the Bishop of London in 1687.

Magnolia Joli Pom Pom was bred by Belgian Phillip de Spoelberch. It’s prized for its hardy nature and pure white of its goblet-shaped petals. With its pink stamens creating a pink centre against the backdrop of pure white petals. Its flowers arrive in April on bare branches bringing a bright blaze of colour to gardens. Joli Pom Pom has large and fragrant goblet-shaped blooms with pure white petals, but it’s the stamens that make it a stand-out magnolia They are intense luminous pink and stand out so sharply against the white petals the flowers appear two-toned.
Blooms last several weeks and fall before its mid-green glossy foliage arrives in May.

This is a really unusual magnolia with high impact colour in spring and glossy leaves until the first winter frosts. It’s a handsome ornamental specimen tree.

Height And Spread of Magnolia Joli Pom Pom
This is a mid-sized magnolia that will reach a height and spread of 8 metres after 10 years.

How Hardy Is Magnolia Joli Pom Pom
Magnolia Joli Pom Pom is hardy down to minus 18 degrees if its roots are well drained and it receives plenty of sun in a sheltered spot.

How To Use Magnolia Joli Pom Pom
Joli Pom Pom is a top ornamental tree choice for a sheltered, sunny spot. It suits country cottage gardens with its large high impact flowers and urban spaces because it brings architectural shapes and doesn’t grow too large.
It’s perfect for woodland borders, sheltered front gardens, and Japanese-style spaces too.

How To Care For Magnolia Joli Pom Pom
Magnolia Joli Pom Pom needs full sun in a sheltered, frost-pocket-free spot that’s protected from harsh winds. If a late hard frost is predicted cover its buds with horticultural fleece.
It does best in neutral to acidic soil, so fill the planting hole with ericaceous compost and top it up with an acidic mulch of pine or bracken-based compost each year. If necessary, you can prune back dead or crossed branches in midsummer after the flowering has finished, but in general magnolias do not need pruning.
