Oenothera Lindheimeri or Gaura & Gaura Varieties

Oenothera Lindheimeri, better known to gardeners as Gaura, is a graceful herbaceous perennial prized for its exceptionally long flowering season and airy, informal appearance. Slender stems carry masses of delicate white or pink star-like flowers that seem to dance above the foliage from late spring or early summer well into autumn. Gaura is particularly effective in sunny borders, cottage gardens and naturalistic planting, where its loose, flowing habit brings movement without overwhelming neighbouring plants. Perfect for pollinators and relatively low maintenance once established, there are many beautiful Gaura Varieties available, ranging from compact plants for containers and border fronts to taller cultivars that create clouds of flowers amongst other perennials.

Oenothera Lindheimeri is a deciduous, clump-forming perennial with narrow, lance-shaped leaves and a light, upright growth habit. Its real attraction comes from the slender, branching flower stems that rise above the foliage and carry a succession of delicate blooms over many months.

The flowers are usually white, pink-flushed or various shades of pink depending on the cultivar. Individual blooms are relatively small, but their abundance and position along fine, wand-like stems create the wonderfully airy effect for which Gaura is renowned. As the stems move in a summer breeze, the flowers can appear almost butterfly-like above the border.

Different Gaura Varieties provide considerable choice in both colour and stature. Some remain compact at around 30–50 cm, while taller selections can approach or exceed a metre when flowering. Oenothera Lindheimeri is native to the southern United States. The dimensions of Oenothera Lindheimeri vary considerably between Gaura Varieties. The species can reach around 1–1.5 metres in height with a spread of approximately 0.5–1 metre, while many modern cultivars are considerably more compact, growing around 30–60 cm tall.

How Hardy is Oenothera Lindheimeri?

Oenothera Lindheimeri is generally hardy through much of the UK when provided with the right growing conditions. The species is rated RHS H4, corresponding to approximately -10°C to -5°C, although hardiness varies somewhat between individual cultivars. Good drainage is particularly important because Gaura dislikes sitting in cold, wet ground during winter.

For the best results, plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Light or partial shade can be tolerated by some Gaura Varieties, but a sunny position generally produces the strongest growth and most abundant flowering. Once established, plants have some drought tolerance and are particularly well suited to warm, sunny borders. In colder or wetter gardens, choosing a sheltered position and ensuring excellent drainage will improve the chances of plants overwintering successfully.

Uses in Garden and Landscape

Gaura is particularly valuable for creating movement and a sense of lightness within a planting scheme. Rather than producing a dense block of colour, its fine stems and numerous small flowers create a translucent veil through which neighbouring plants remain visible.

Oenothera Lindheimeri is an excellent choice for cottage gardens, prairie-style planting, mixed herbaceous borders, wildlife gardens and informal naturalistic schemes. Gaura Varieties can be repeated through a border to create rhythm and continuity, while compact forms are also useful in patio containers and smaller gardens.

The long flowering season is another major advantage. As many early-summer perennials begin to fade, Gaura can continue producing flowers well into autumn, helping to bridge the transition between summer and later-season planting. Its pollinator-friendly flowers make it especially useful where extending the availability of nectar through the growing season is a priority.

Care Tips

Plant Oenothera Lindheimeri in spring in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, but avoid creating permanently wet conditions around the roots. Once mature, Gaura is relatively drought tolerant and generally requires little feeding; excessively rich conditions can encourage lush growth at the expense of the naturally graceful habit.

Remove spent flowering stems if necessary to encourage fresh growth and prolong the display. If flowering begins to diminish during summer, plants can be lightly cut back to stimulate another flush. Rather than cutting Gaura down in autumn, leave the stems through winter and cut back old growth in early spring as new growth begins.
