Prunus Domestica The Czar is a compact, self-fertile fruiting plum tree variety. This deciduous tree is a reliable producer of fruit which is ready for harvest early in August. Considered primarily a culinary plum variety, it can be eaten raw especially if you prefer an acidic note to your fruit.

In spring, the Czar Plum tree is adorned with masses of white blossom which make a spectacular sight in the garden and attract insects. This cultivar has the Perfect for Pollinators badge, a sure sign it is a good source of nectar for bees. The showy flowers are followed by fruit, which are large, round and a very deep blue. The flesh of Czar Plum is firm and tart, which makes them ideal for jam and jellies.

Height and Spread of Prunus Domestica The Czar
Depending on the rootstock, Czar Plum trees can achieve a maximum height and spread of 2.5 to 4 metres. These are fruit trees suitable both for large and small gardens.

How Hardy Is Prunus Domestica The Czar
Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, the Czar Plum tree will not be bothered even if the temperatures drop to 20 degrees below zero. For its good constitution and remarkable performance in the garden, this plum variety received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.

How To Use Prunus Domestica Czar
Both ornamental and edible, Czar Plum can be grown solely for the fruit it produces or for its decorative appearance. Ideally suited for cottage and informal gardens, this atttractive fruit tree can be used as a focus of interest in the garden when planted on its own.

This is a self-fertile cultivar, which means that insect pollination will ensure fruit production. However, Czar Plum can be an excellent pollination partner to sterile plum varieties, such as Excalibur or the Opal or Victoria plum trees.

How To Care For Prunus Domestica Czar
Plum Czar will be happy in any soil, as long as it is moist but well-drained. For best results, choose loamy or sandy soils. Lke most fruit trees, this plum tree needs to be planted in a spot in full sun, to encourage better fruit production. The pruning method will depend on the tree’s training form. As a heavy-cropping variety, this cultivar will appreciate fruit thinning, regardless of its shape.

As one of the most popular plum varieties across the United Kingdom, the Czar Plum is a cultivar with a good track record and impressive performance. Not only that its plums are ideal for making fruit preserves, but this cultivar also offers multiple seasons of interest as an ornamental tree in the garden.
