RHS Perfect for pollinators logo

Pileostegia Viburnoides, commonly known as Climbing Hydrangea and synonymous with Hydrangea Viburnoides, is an unusual and striking evergreen climber that deserves a place in any garden. Unlike a lot of climbers, it is self-clinging, making it easy to establish on walls, fences, or tree trunks without the need for additional support. Its dark green, leathery foliage provides year-round interest, and in late summer it bursts into dense panicles of small, star-shaped creamy white flowers, which are highly attractive to pollinators. This variety has been recognised as Perfect for Pollinators, further underlining its garden value.

Pileostegia Viburnoides is slower growing than some other climbers, but it will ultimately reach an impressive size, rewarding patience with a dense, textured cover that remains attractive throughout the year. Its ability to thrive in virtually any soil and in positions ranging from full sun to shade makes it extremely versatile for planting schemes.

Height and Width of Pileostegia Viburnoides:

Although slow to establish, Hydrangea Viburnoides can eventually reach heights of 10–15 metres, with a spread of 4–6 metres. Its steady growth rate makes it well-suited to gardens where control and long-term structure are valued.

How hardy is Pileostegia Viburnoides?

This Climbing Hydrangea is hardy in most parts of the UK, coping with typical winters without issue. Its evergreen leaves are tough and resilient, ensuring good coverage even in colder months. Shelter from severe, drying winds is recommended in more exposed areas.

Uses in Garden and/or Landscape:

Pileostegia Viburnoides is ideal for covering shaded walls, unsightly fences, or the trunks of mature trees where other climbers may struggle. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round structure, while the late summer flowers bring seasonal interest and attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. It can also be used in larger gardens as a backdrop for mixed borders.

Care Tips:

Plant Pileostegia Viburnoides in any well-drained soil. It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, from full sun to full shade, although flowering will be more abundant with some sun exposure. Minimal pruning is required – simply remove dead or overcrowded stems to maintain shape. Mulching in spring will help retain soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.

Compared with other climbing hydrangeas such as Hydrangea Petiolaris and Hydrangea Seemannii, Pileostegia Viburnoides stands out as an evergreen option, offering year-round foliage. While Hydrangea Petiolaris is deciduous and flowers in early summer, and Hydrangea Seemannii has larger, more exotic-looking foliage, Pileostegia Viburnoides combines durability with late summer flowering, filling a seasonal gap and providing long-lasting garden interest.
