View plant size:Pinus Wallichiana Densa Hill is commonly known as Bhutan Pine Densa Hill or Himalayan White Pine. It is an elegant, medium-sized evergreen conifer prized for its long, soft needles and narrowly conical crown. The tree brings a refined, airy texture to gardens and woodland settings and suits borders where a tall but slender evergreen is required.
The Pinus Wallichiana species of Conifers are native to the valleys of the Himalaya from Afghanistan the North East India as well as parts of China. Elegant, pendulous needles are a feature of the Bhutan Pine. The variety Densa Hill forms a narrow conical canopy with slightly drooping branchlets and upward-turned tips. The bark is initially smooth and dark grey, becoming paler and fissured with age to reveal attractive surface texture. Needles are arranged in bundles of five, are about 10 centimetres long, and hang in loose sprays. Their soft, blue-green colour and delicate feel create movement and a gentle silhouette in the landscape.
Cones appear on relatively young specimens and are oblong to cylindrical, measuring roughly 15–25 centimetres long. They are pale brown and notably sticky with resin, a feature that adds tactile interest and makes the cones conspicuous against the foliage.
Height and spread of Himalayan White Pine Densa Hill
Pinus Wallichiana Densa Hill typically reaches approximately 7 metres in height with a mature spread near 2.5 metres, forming an upright, compact profile suitable for medium gardens.
How hardy is Pinus Wallichiana Densa Hill?
This Himalayan White Pine is fully hardy in the UK and tolerates cold winter conditions when planted in free-draining soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from harsh coastal winds that can dry the long needle tips, and establishes best with consistent moisture during its early years.
Uses in garden and landscape
Pinus Wallichiana Densa Hill suits mixed borders, woodland edges and larger courtyard gardens where a vertical accent is required without excessive bulk. Bhutan Pine Densa Hill combines well with shade-tolerant shrubs such as Rhododendrons and Camellias or underplanted with ferns and woodland perennials to emphasise its soft foliage. Grouping with contrasting conifers provides season-long structure and varied texture.
Care tips:
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged sites. Pinus Wallichiana Densa Hill prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils and benefits from an annual mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is rarely necessary; remove dead or crossing branches in late winter to maintain form. Water regularly during dry spells while the tree is establishing.
