Viburnum Hillieri Winton, commonly known as Arrowwood Winton, is an award-winning deciduous shrub with a compact form, glossy foliage and seasonal display of creamy-white flowers followed by clusters of berries. With the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, Viburnum Hillieri Winton is valued for reliability, hardiness and versatility in borders, hedging and mixed planting schemes.

Viburnum Winton forms a rounded, bushy shrub with dense branching and a neat habit. In late spring to early summer, it produces domed clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, lightly fragrant and attractive to pollinators. By autumn, these give way to small red berries ripening to black, providing a food source for birds. The glossy green foliage adds interest through summer, turning shades of red and purple in autumn before leaf fall.

As a hybrid, Viburnum Hillieri Winton is more compact than many other Viburnum varieties, making it suitable for smaller gardens. It pairs well with hydrangeas, cornus and ornamental grasses, or as a backdrop to perennials such as rudbeckias and asters. It is also a strong choice for wildlife gardens, adding nectar, pollen and berries across the seasons.

Height and Spread of Viburnum Hillieri Winton:

  • Height: 2.0–2.5 m
  • Spread: 2.0–2.5 m

How Hardy is Viburnum Hillieri Winton?

Viburnum Winton is very hardy across the UK, tolerating temperatures well below freezing once established. It grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Adaptable to different soil types, it thrives in both chalk and clay if not waterlogged. Shelter from cold, drying winds enhances flowering and berry set, but it is tolerant of urban conditions and moderate exposure.

Uses in Garden and Landscape:

  • Mixed shrub borders for seasonal flowers, berries and autumn colour.
  • Informal hedging or screening.
  • Compact enough for smaller gardens or courtyards.
  • Pairs well with roses, perennials and spring bulbs for layered planting.
  • Pollinator- and bird-friendly gardens with year-round value.

Care Tips:

  • Planting: Plant in autumn or spring in fertile, well-prepared soil. Allow space for full spread.
  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment; moderately drought-tolerant when mature.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning; remove dead or damaged wood after flowering and lightly shape if required.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring; mulch annually with organic matter.
  • Maintenance: Generally pest-free, but monitor for viburnum beetle.
