Chinese Witch Hazel – known as Hamamelis Mollis is the shrub of the moment at this time of the year… Witch Hazel is mainly in the public conciousness for it’s pharmacological uses, and now it is gaining ground for its welcome displays in the winter garden.
In UK gardens a shrub that blooms in December through January is a rare and precious thing and for these blooms to have the sweetest fragrance on top is just an absolute bonus.
Chinese Witch Hazel is easy to grow in most soils and aspects this truly handsome shrub needs little maintenance, a little pruning – just to remove any dead branches and to give shape.
The long anticipated wispy spidery blooms of yellow and orange varieties develop on smooth branches as early as December and they carry on blooming in these beautiful colours through to early Spring.
Hamamelis Mollis has true all year round interest – the large rounded leaves are constantly changing colour throughout the year and the Autumn display is just stunning with multi-coloured leaves finally turning the brightest and deepest red.
