Acer Palmatum Taylor or Japanese Maple Taylor, is a stunning variegated variety of Japanese Maple which will take on a starring role throughout the growing season. This small, spreading deciduous tree will make a lovely addition to a garden area with dappled shade.

Developed in Boskoop, Netherlands by D. Van der Maat and introduced in 2004, Acer Palmatum Taylor is prized for its brilliant foliage. In spring, the new deeply divided leaves emerge coloured a brilliant salmon pink, almost neon, sometimes with irregular dark green blotches. In summer the pink fades to a soft pink and cream, with the green variegation remaining. In autumn the cream sections of the leaves turn a bright lime green while the pink intensifies before dropping. The leave shae is small 5-lobed deeply divided strap-like leaves.

Hardy in most parts of the UK, Acer Palmatum Taylor will grow to a height and spread of 2 metres in 10 to 20 years. It is not necessary to prune to maintain their natural graceful rounded shape, but dead or damaged branches can be removed in early spring. Plant Japanese Maple Taylor in dappled shade in a sheltered position with a south, east, or west aspect, in moist but well-drained sand, loam or clay soil with an acid to neutral pH. Mulch the ground well to protect the roots. Intolerant of salt, it is not a good choice for coastal locations, but it does well in cities as it is tolerant of pollution. It is deer resistant so is well-suited to country gardens.

This small tree will make a big impact wherever you plant it, so choose the site for your Acer Palmatum Taylor carefully! It should not be in a crowded border, but rather placed where its foliage will be able to shine without competition. Its small size makes it an ideal container plant for a courtyard, or patio, where its long season of colourful foliage will show to advantage. It’s also a good choice for a rock or gravel garden where it will stand out. As a part of a foundation planting Japanese Maple Taylor will be a colourful highlight!

Acer Palmatum Taylor is well-suited to any spot where you want a small, hardy tree or shrub to make a big splash. The stand-out colour of the foliage all season makes this one a winner! An ideal addition to the Japanese style garden.
