RHS Perfect for pollinators logo

Buddleja Davidii Butterfly Tower is a deciduous butterfly magnet shrub with rich purple-pink flowers in summer. It suits most spaces including difficult dry soil, hot borders, and chalky ground.

Buddleja Davidii is native to China and some parts of Japan. Buddleja was named after the English botanist Reverend Adam Buddle and the species Davidii after the French missionary Father Armand David. Buddleja was first sold in Europe in the 1890s so it has a long history in the UK and is naturalising in our wild spaces.

The cultivar Buddleja Davidii Butterfly Tower is loved for its upright growth habit and rich pink-purple flowerheads made from numerous tiny blooms. Its flowers appear in summer as long cones on the tips of new growth, but its grey-green foliage appears much earlier in spring. Flowers repeat bloom across summer only stopping as the weather turns frosty.

Butterflies love buddleja of all kinds which is why it’s also called Butterfly Bush Butterfly Tower and holds the RHS Perfect for Pollinators badge. You may also find it called by its synonym Buddleja Davidii Tobud1305.

Height And Spread of Buddleja Davidii Butterfly Tower
Butterfly Bush Butterfly Tower is more upright than other buddlejas. It reaches a columnar height of two metres and spreads over a metre.

How Hardy Is Buddleja Davidii Butterfly Tower
Buddleja is hardy in the UK if its roots are well-drained. It likes a sunny spot and is rarely affected by pests or pollution.

How To Use Buddleja Davidii Butterfly Tower
This is an excellent choice for low-maintenance pollinator-friendly gardens because it attracts so many bees, butterflies, and hoverflies throughout the summer months.
Its upright habit suits a compact garden and its hardy no maintenance nature requires little intervention. Use it as summertime screening at the back of a border, in a front garden, or in a large, well-watered and fed container to boost a balcony, deck, or patio.
It’s also a great coastal plant that’s tough enough to cope with breezes and coastal sprays.

How To Care For Buddleja Davidii Butterfly Tower
Butterfly Bush Butterfly Tower is easy to grow and requires very little care.
Plant it in any well-drained soil in a sunny to a partially sunny spot and water it well until it’s established.
Regular pruning isn’t required, but removing spent flowerheads encourages more blooms. Cut it back hard in March and it will rapidly regrow during spring.
Apply a thick layer of well-rotted organic mulch to the base in early spring to trap moisture and provide nutrients for the coming season’s glorious flower show.
