Cornus Kousa Mount Fuji is a variety of deciduous flowering dogwood with a hardy nature and abundant white flushed pink flower bracts in early to mid-summer. It’s a good choice for wildlife-friendly low maintenance gardens and woodland areas.

Cornus kousa is a small dogwood that’s better known as Chinese or Japanese Dogwood or Szechuan strawberry. It’s native to light woodlands in Eastern Asia and its flower bracts are so attractive there are a great number of cultivars including Cornus Kousa Roberts Selectie and the RHS AGM-winning Cornus Kousa Teutonia.

The Mount Fuji Dogwood variety occurred near the slopes of Mount Fuji as its name suggests and is appreciated for its unusual flushed flower bracts that are more compact than other cultivars. Flowers emerge in early summer, sometimes jade green before turning pinky-white, and they bloom until mid-summer. If pollinated, small strawberry-like fruits develop in early autumn. They are edible, but a touch bitter. if left unharvested birds enjoy them.

Autumn brings about a rich flush of red, yellow and gold foliage as it prepares to shed its leaves with the first frosts.

This a very attractive richly blooming dogwood that mixes well with other large shrubs and dogwood species.

Height And Spread of Cornus Kousa Mount Fuji
Cornus Kousa Mount Fuji reaches a maximum height and spread of 3 metres over 10 years.

How Hardy Is Cornus Kousa Mount Fuji
Dogwood is hardy down to minus temperatures in the UK if its roots are well drained and it gets plenty of sun in the summer months. Pests and disease are rarely an issue.

How To Use Cornus Kousa Mount Fuji
Japanese Dogwood Mount Fuji is small enough to suit compact gardens and urban spaces but has plenty of impact for most of the year. Its architectural branches and changing foliage colours catch the eye year-round, and its white flushed flower bracts rival roses and magnolias with very little effort on your part.
Because it loves full sun, hot informal flower borders and city courtyards are good places to grow it - along with low maintenance spaces and wildlife-friendly gardens.

How To Care For Cornus Kousa Mount Fuji
Dogwoods are easy to grow and care for. They are one of the least demanding shrubs and small trees. Choose a spot in full sun, or partial shade, but be aware that it needs plenty of sunshine to flower well. Japanese Dogwood Mount Fuji will grow in most drained fertile soils including chalk in exposed and sheltered positions.
Pruning is not required and can ruin its shape, so hold off with secateurs until early spring and only remove broken or damaged branches.
Give it plenty of water until you see new growth and a thick layer of well-rotted organic mulch in early spring to trap moisture and provide nutrients for the best summer flower show.
