Clematis Texensis Princess Diana (Synonym: Clematis Texensis The Princess of Wales) is a superb deciduous climber that brings bold summer colour to the garden. With its rich heritage and Award of Garden Merit (AGM) status, this popular cultivar is part of the Clematis Texensis group – known for its distinctive tulip-like flowers and compact growth habit. This variety is a must-have for enthusiasts looking for a striking flowering climber that performs well on current year's growth.

Part of the Clematis Texensis family, Princess Diana produces an abundance of elegant, tulip-shaped flowers in a vivid pinkish red shade. Each bloom, up to 6 cm long, is adorned with creamy maroon stamens that create a dramatic contrast and draw in pollinators. Flowering from mid summer through to early autumn, it provides a welcome burst of colour when many other plants are past their peak. The foliage is a fresh, medium green with a graceful, twining habit that lends itself beautifully to climbing supports or weaving through shrubs.

The Clematis Texensis group is native to the southern United States and is admired for its late blooming cycle, unlike the earlier-flowering Clematis Armandii or the showy double blooms of Clematis Florida types such as Alba Plena. Princess Diana has been bred to offer exceptional garden performance in UK conditions, flowering on the current season’s growth – making it both reliable and easy to prune.

Height and Width of Clematis Texensis Princess Diana

This compact climber typically reaches a height of around 2 to 3 metres and spreads to approximately 1 metre. It’s perfect for smaller gardens, plant containers, or growing through a supporting shrub or small tree.

How hardy is Clematis Princess Diana?

Clematis Princess Diana is reliably hardy throughout most parts of the UK. It will tolerate winter temperatures down to around -10°C to -5°C. In colder regions, mulching the base in winter can provide added protection.

Uses in Garden and / or Landscape

This variety is ideal for training up obelisks, trellises, pergolas, or even along fencing. Its refined, upright flowers add architectural interest and a splash of strong colour. Clematis Princess Diana also works well when grown through companion shrubs or small trees, adding an elegant layer of vertical interest and seasonal contrast.

Care Tips

Plant Clematis Texensis Princess Diana in well-drained, fertile soil with its roots shaded and its top growth in full sun or light dappled shade. It belongs to pruning group 3, which means it should be cut back hard in late winter or early spring to around 20–30 cm from ground level. Regular feeding during the growing season will encourage strong flowering. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

This variety offers a reliable and eye-catching performance, bringing summer-long colour to garden spaces large or small.
